Ok, here is the final scoop on this saga...

I found where I was going wrong. I uninstalled Limewire twice and reinstalled to no effect. Then, cause I am a dimwit, noticed that my previous download attempts and user preferences were showing up in the new installs. So, I did a search on my HD, and bingo. The uninstaller was not de-installing the "preferences" file in the library. I manually removed that, did an install, and success!

I would highy recommed that the Limewire folks code the uninstaller to perform a full uninstall to aviod circimstances just like this.
