I am new to Linux (Mandrake 9.1) but not to P2P programs. I used many of them in Win98 and I can tell you what has been said before in this forum. . . GTK Gnutella ROCKS!
But . . . I am concerned with security. I have set up the standard firewall in M9.1, only because I don't know enough at this point to set up a decent firewall.
So I plead total ignorance at the moment. How do I set up an open port for GTK?
And are people who connect to me allowed access only to my upload area? Or can they waltz around my hard drives at will?
I am (hopefully) firewalled but I don't like the idea of making it difficult for other users to download files from me. Not that it matters much at the moment . . . I trashed my Windows HD during installation and lost several GB's of mp3's so there is nothing for anyone to download until I rebuild my collection
BTW, it was my error . . . Mandrake did not trash out my hard drive. Careless use of the delete key (I should have known better) was the problem. But my screwup was worth it . . I am free at last! NO MORE MICROSOFT!!
And finally, I downloaded the GTK .rpm file (for Mandrake 8.0) and it insalled in 9.1 with absolutely no problems
Thanks,
Mike
