I can't speak for the other platforms out there, but I recently installed the (basic) free Linux client, and I don't seem to have any ads or pop ups at all. Works for me! Why pay? Perhaps I am cheating by running LimeWire from a desktop shortcut instead of runLime.sh

Who knows? Worth a try for others out there.
