Hmm...
As I figured it out (yea me), .m4a is actually mpeg4. iTunes for OSX converts (by default I think) any files it imports into this format.
I'm not too sure about 9.2's iTunes, but since you tell me you can't play them, then...
In OSX, you can go to preferences and choose a different import format (like .mp3 or whotevah). I figure that you either are gonna have to look for an .m4a-to-.mp3 converter for 9.2 (if such a thing exists) or empty your wallet and pay for a newer OS (if supported by your Mac)
