the next version might allow direct connections, but in the meantime, try sending your friend a "magnet" link to one of your unique files (Right-click on a file in your library pane to get at the magnet details).

If the magnet works, you could then try to browse the upload to open a connection to your friend's computer. Firewalls or a busy connection, though, will not allow the host to be browsed.
