A DSL connection is fast enough to serve as an ultrapeer, - it doesn't slow down the speed of your downloads unless you are sharing very popular files (so you get a lot of upload requests).
More than 10 downloads at the same time causes your connections to become a little instable, I wouldn't increase that value beyond 10.
You can do as many searches as you want. More open search windows just need a little more memoy.
Compression reduces the Gnutella message traffic. This is important if you are acting as an ultrapeer.
