You might try reinstalling Java (make sure it's the most recent version for Win ME.) Be it anything else I'll leave that up to the Windows people here. Hope that works.

Latest Windoze Java is 1.4.2.xx, ME, NT (service pack 6a, whatever that is)
The site is java.com (no www) and there's a manual dld as well as an automatic (the automatic detects your OS and dlds the latest version for it automatically)
