The LAN at this building was designed by a volunteer who didn't really know what he was doing. The LAN is maintained by a volunteer elderly man who doesn't exactly know how it works. Basically the system is self sustaining somehow, if a problem occures, a faculty member simply resets the equipment and all is made well... The school does not allow students to have any access to the equipment or controls.

I asked about P2P sharing, and they basically had not position.... They basically told me that if it works, good for me, if it doesn't, too bad for me. They don't care if I use such applicaitons or not, however they will not make adjustments to the network settings because "it's working, and we're afraid that if we make any adjustments, it will cease to function as well as it does now"... I tried to convince them to open ports 109, 110, 25, 143, 993 and 995 so that students could use mail readers, but that request was denied. So we can only check e-mail if there is a web based interface...

So, I'm not afraid of school policy, but I would be pleased if I could get this to work at all... I'm not aware of any other students in the building who have ever gotten P2P to work for them, so maybe it's impossible. I just happen to be more stubborn than most before I give up.
