Default Spyware, Privacy, and Gnutella

Long ago in a forum far far away...

Hey guys, the AdWare just pays the bills. Sure, the advertising site keeps a list of all the IPs who are sent the ad in the name of BearShare...
But your IPs are NOT hidden anyway!!

Any undercover RIAA/MPAA agent (the consulting firms they hire) can place themselves into the Gnutella network and learn the IPs of the surrounding users anyway. Additionally, they can learn what files you're offering and even DL some of them!! (Don't fool yourself into thinking they're not doing this already! They're just waiting for legal precedents to be set with Napster that will make it cheaper for them to prosecute the Top 2000 sharers... or so...)

The dangers posed by "Spyware" are far less than those we face already just by being on the network. At least spyware makes no note of what you're doing there, just that you're there (and when)...

In light of that, maybe it's not such a risky proposition in trade for Free Peers, Inc. being able to pay their bills.
WHY do people seem to think that "Spyware" poses some additional risk?? Such fear is irrational and unjustified, from technical or legal standpoints.

It all is a matter of opinion in what kind of society one likes to live in:
- Big brother watching you
or
- Ensuring one's privacy and having choices what personal information one gives out

If I lived in China or Russia, I have not much choice probably. Even the newspaper articles are 'filtered'.

You have no problem with sharing your personal surfing habits? Fine. Open up your PC to the world.
I am sure you have a firewall running?

Choice is the agenda, freedom of choice.
Internet included.

Thumbs up Good Point JD

In fact, the internet and newspapers are monitored in many more places than just Russia and China; with privacy becoming 'limited' around the world it is only natural for companies to want to take a part in this. Firewalls help if you are into security and retaining privacy. Safeweb.com does a nice job also of keeping the user private, but even they take information from their users, and bombard you with ads. If you want a non-spyware/non-adware program, write your own! I apologize for being blunt, but it is like voting. It isn't fair to speak up and/or complain if you yourself haven't voted. Do something about this complaint instead of just, well, complaining about it!
