The TechNutopia Fullsize Hostiles List for BearShare and LimeWire This is an expanded list for protection against spammers and other abusers of gnutella. Place the list in this archive, called "hostiles.txt", into the folder C:\Program Files\BearShare\db. The smaller copy already there will not be lost, as it is already built in to BearShare. LimeWire users: Place "hostiles.txt", into LimeWire's settings folder. On Windows : C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_NAME\.limewire Alternate location: C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_NAME\Application Data\Limewire (You may have to change a setting in Explorer to be able to see this folder. Go to the Tools menu, then Folder Options, switch to the View tab and turn on "Show hidden files and folders".) On Windows Vista: C:\Users\your username\AppData\Roaming\LimeWire LW Vista users - if you need help finding the LimeWire folder then please check this link for info: LimeWire Pref Folder in Vista On Mac OSX 10.4 and up : Macintosh HD/Users/YOUR_NAME/Library/Preferences/LimeWire Expect a significant delay as BearShare starts up. Loading this list is the first thing it does, and apparently it has to convert it internally as it does so. Update - Feb, 18 2005: BearShare 4.7.0.70 and up now load the list almost instantly. Thanks, Ed! CPU usage will be higher if you are running an ultrapeer, but BearShare will stay in leaf mode unless you have a fast computer. If you find it too heavy a load, go to Setup/Service and put a checkmark on "Never become an ultrapeer" Update - Feb. 23, 2005: BearShare 4.7.0.71 and up now run the list more efficiently. Thanks again, Ed! ;] Update - July 12, 2005: A new bug in versions of BearShare (5.0 and up) makes older versions of the hostiles list block many innocent IP addresses. DELETE AND STOP SHARING ALL HOSTILES LISTS OLDER THAN JULY 12, 2005. Update - July 16, 2005: All LAN ranges are opened, so be careful about files from your own local network. Added about 8800 hosts infected with the prolific VB:CC worm. The source list for this worm will be rotated slowly enough for most of the blocked hosts to detect and clean themselves before they drop from the list. Those few that fail to remove it will roll forward to a longer term blocklist. The VB:CC list will probably stabilize to slightly over 10,000 for the next few months and taper off to near zero as people update their antivirus scanners. Update - September 26, 2005: More worms and trojans added. The list is now about as big as it will ever get, with 223,916 rules, and I'd need more RAM to make it any bigger. ;] Update - September 28, 2005: Catching up with a notorious spammer who just happened to change tactics as the list was updated on Monday. A coincidence, I'm sure… :p Update - December 4, 2005: Added many more worms and heavy spammers, with thousands of sites, but constantly improving intel results in a slightly smaller and more effective list. Update - February 1, 2007: Notice the name change? That's right, it's not just for BearShare anymore. LimeWire 4.13 and up can use this list now. Update - February 11, 2007: New Worm. It's still small, so get stomping! ;] Update - March 3, 2007: Skyrider (that new commercial P2P spammer announced last year) finally pops up on our RADAR! ;] Update - July 22, 2007: More info makes raw input top 800.000, but better intel shrinks the final result to less than half. Update - January 12, 2008: Continuing improvements in intel are still shrinking the list while covering more address space, and most of the worms that were a major problem a year or more ago are quickly going extinct. We're mostly fighting the last few desperate spammers now, and recent updates to LimeWire are helping stomp them out of the network. PLEASE REMEMBER TO DELETE THE PREVIOUS LISTS! They go stale and should be replaced often. Here's a web link to the ZIP file:TechNutopia Fullsize Hostiles List (Original out-of-date old version, date: 2011-06-12) …and another: TechNutopia Fullsize Hostiles List Edit by LOTR, the above hostiles file has not been updated since mid 2011 or earlier, thus a new updated version below: New Fullsize Hostiles list 2013 Download the Fullsize Hostiles List 2013 via 4Shared (need to be a 4Shared member to use their downloads) and the no Jap Block version via 4Shared. via SaberCat (recommended) Download the Fullsize Hostiles List 2013 via MediaFire - (If you wish to use an installer instead, find it either at MediaFire or SaberCat.) Now option to choose a Hostiles file which does or does not block most of the Japanese clients. Edit February 2013: a single installer is now inclusive of both options and for either standard BearShare or the BearShare 5.1 Beta Test version. The blocklist is updated approximately every 2 months. Edit: March: fixed a silly error in the installer. I must have been experimenting, sleepy and forgot partial code still there as one choice would not install an appropriate file. :o Filenames: BearShare - Hostiles Blocklist 2013 installer (both) Hostiles_2013-NoJapBlocks Hostiles_2013 The hostiles files have been put together in same folder as other BearShare material to download from. For details see here or here for the Japanese block choice. (If LimeWire users were to use this Netmask version of the hostiles, you should change the name from Hostiles to hostiles (all lower-case letters.) Otherwise the file is ignored.) Windows 8 or later users will either need to use the installer or else, change the permissions of the BearShare program folder and reboot computer so you have permission to replace items in the program's db folder. . |
I'm obscenely happy to see this being updated again. Thank you! |
Ok, I'm less than delirious after discovering that I'm *on* the list. What can I do about this? |
Let's see which category you landed under. Hold on a sec… |
Ah, there you are. Check your shared folders for empty zip files. They are always exactly 22 bytes long. If you find more than one and the filenames are varied you may have been infected by a worm that was trying and failing to make new zips to spread itself. Check the created and modified dates to see how old they are, and make sure your antivirus is up to date and still working. |
I do have two of them, but I put them there. The titles of the files were the actual content. I'll change them to text files instead though, thanks! |
Where to install Referred here from forum. I am trying to put the hostiles list in for the first time. I do not find Bearshare I do not find a settings folder in Lirewire I have hidden files shown. I am using Windows XP Home. My original post in another forum was a question about whether blocking very small file hosts in search results really does any good, or do they replicate under new names. Thanks. |
The LW preferences folder is found here: C:\Documents and Settings\your name\Application Data\LimeWire. *Edited because of a brain fade* |
BearShare is here: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showthread.php?t=53386 LimeWire 4.13 is here: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/beta.shtml (LimeWire versions older than 4.13 do not use the Fullsize List.) Some of those worms change names very often. The developers are working on ways to block them too, but for now the Fullsize List will partly block them. |
Hostiles List Thanks. I saw that this is a BearShare forum and I will move this post. I have the latest Limewire. I just don't know where to put the hostiles file and can find any that you all have listed. I'll put this post over on the Limewire board. In my Limewire file I have: 3 folders - Network, Themes and XML |
Look in your personal folders, as Birdy suggested. That's another place you should become familiar with as a lot of programs put configuration info and data in there to personalize themselves to each individual user. |
As long as you know the name of the folder, Start -> Search -> For files or folders |
Thanks all. I am content and so is Limewire now. |
Hello, this looks like something I should do but I cannot find a limewire preferences or settings folder. I just signed up and am using the newest version of pro. I did a search in all the places mentioned as well as a Start -> Search -> limewire and found nothing like what y'all have mentioned. Any help? |

When you click on the link to the hostiles list in Aaron's post, you'll be prompted to d/load a zip file. Save it to where ever("My Documents"), unzip it and there'll be a document file called "hostiles.txt". Copy or cut and paste that file into the "limewire" folder, and that's it. Next time you start up LW the list will take affect. |
By the way. Your version of LimeWire has to be 4.13.0 and up. The 4.12 series does not use hostiles.txt. You should be able to get it at your download page for Pro but it is the beta version, not the "latest" public release one. |
Try following the instructions in this thread as the LimeWire folder is hidden... But once you find it don't delete it because this particular post is for deleting that folder, just right click on it, then open it and cut and paste the hostile list into it....Just follow Lotr's screenshot's... http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showpo...32&postcount=4 |
I am having some trouble finding the upgraded version dl for limewire. I have 4.12.11, Pro, how can I upgrade to the one that uses this hostiles list? |
You can download the 4.13.2 (current Beta version) using your Pro personal download page;) It should say "New Beta available"...click on that. Or, if you don't have your download page bookmarked, go here & enter the email address you used to buy Pro. Providing you bought Pro less than 6 months ago, you'll be able to download the Beta Pro version. http://sales.limewire.com/support/? If your Pro's out of date, you can download the basic Beta version from the basic download page:p http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml |
Got it, and now it should all be working, thanks. |
how do i do this for frostwire? EDIT: I put it in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\FrostWire is that right, the filters to show block messages from specific hosts is blank tho.. ?? EDIT: the filters i meant that were empty are that the prefs filters section on blocked hosts show nothing and is blank.. |
The filter section in the options is not connected to the new modules involved with hostiles.txt. It may still work but the new code is far faster and more efficient, enabling FrostWire to handle a list hundreds of times larger yet still be faster. If you always log in as "Administrator" that location is the right one. If you have more than one of those folders then copy it to all of them. |
just checking, and yes i am the only one on this computer, so administrator is the only folder.. ty for the reply.. |
So, was the last update March 3rd, like it shows in the Original post? And is that where I would look to see if I need to delete my old list and ad a new one? |
Updates are more frequent than indicated and are deliberately randomized so the larger spammers and hostiles can't evade the blocks. Try once per week even if it looks like nothing has changed. If you subscribe to the thread using the link I provided you will get reminders by email. I frequently get the forum to send out those reminders even when no changes are visible. |
Hostiles List Install Procedure HEY, AW.... How ya doin'... May be a bit weird, but I've installed BS on 7 different comps in the past 10 days... No rest for the wicked, what ? Anyway... What I've certainly observed, and have seen no reference above to this point, is that one must FIRST run BS 'normal' and allow the first normal connect sequence to occur. Meaning, simply, if you install BS and immediately copy the latest hostiles list into the BS system, without having allowed a first launch and connect after install, YOU WILL NEVER CONNECT. It appears to me that the first connect sequence after the initial installation MUST be allowed to proceed.... Then, close BS - Shutdown PC... Start PC and then bung the 'new hostiles list' into your BS \Program Files directory.... Man, I tried this maybe 30 times total on the above mentioned machines.... Only way to connect at all with the new hostiles list was to copy the list into an already configured and at least one time connected to hosts with the intial and standard BS installation.... Make sense or do I need a tad more local 53% rum ? Say yes !!!! lol (That's 106 Proof by the standards of The Peoples Imperialistic Kleptocracy of Dumfukistan) |
Does anyone know how to add the lists from B.I.S.S. Blocklist Manager to Limewire? |
BLM is one of the tools I use to build the list, and I merge in most of the Bluetack lists too. Of course, I also use 79 more (at last count) lists, most of which I generate myself from scans of the network. Urs, just prime the old pump with fresh gwebcache.dat and connect.txt files from your old /db/ folder and you can skip the extra gyrations. |
Hey Aaron, I have dn/lded and placed Hostiles list in App Data file in Limewire and I can't find any evidence of the list in LW. Am I missing something?? If you need more info Please let me know. I have screen shots if that will help you help me. Thanks, Remoc |
There's no indication of the presence of the list within LimeWire itself. This is deliberate, because any attempt to view such a large list tends to lock GUI up until Java gets the whole thing into a listview. I don't think it was hooked up to the logging systems either because performance is the highest priority and the Patricia Trie code was a first for any Java program. |
If done right, Java has no problem to display such a list, our experience show only some temporary slowdowns when initially sorting by the number of hits of a blocked IP. |
I'd rather save the 10+ megs anyway. :D |
Displaying data you have in memory anyway doesn't mean it will use much additional memory. Compared to the memory used by around 400000 address ranges, the widget itself and the most of the times not even displayed 20-30 address strings in the users viewport is negligible, it might not even make up 1%. |
It's probably just low on the list of priorities. I wouldn't be surprised because virtually nobody would want it and since I gather it's a new type of structure (in java), somebody would actually have to write new code to get a reasonably efficient view on contents. Maybe an indirect approach will be needed, like allow the user a view and edit on the external hostiles list, then load it up again. Of course, other things may need a refit to accommodate updates after everything has been in place for a while. More checks and hoops. Resources may be running on fumes at that moment so you've got to be ready for anything. Easier to just pot the code into it's box while it still works so fast, eh? ; ] |
No To Paedophiles Hi, Just recently installed limewire and its fantastic, however when I clicked on to video was appalled to find porn of the paedophile nature came up. quite happy with adult porn. so please get these sick and criminal people off your otherwise brilliant site. A1ANP1GOTT |
Hey Alan, Just to let you know you have posted in the Bearshare Forum. As far as the porn goes, P2P means that you are sharing files from other hosts computers, so there is really no way to police what someone is sharing. There is no servers so you just have to be careful and always use Bitzi. Here are a few other tips. :PEACE: How to use Bitzi Fake files showing up in search results How to find music(tips for movies, too) |
Aaron. A BIG THANKYOU for all the work on hostiles list, BRILLIANT !! Many Thanks, N2:aweof::aweof::aweof: |

LW Classic uses a very early version of Java. |
Only versions 4.13 and up have this new feature. |
In that case the reference to the Mac OS 8 & 9 preference folder location should probably be removed & a note placed explaining this doesn't apply to their versions. You'd be surprised how many pre-OSX users there still are out there. Of course, add to that those who are still using Mac 10.1->3, & are thus also not able to use the new feature, as the last version 10.3 users can use is LW 4.12.16, & for OSX 10.1 is LW 4.8.1. Altogether that's a lot of mac users in the gnutella community. Only those who use OSX 10.4 or higher can use the hostiles list. Should probably be noted on your first or second post in this thread. ;) :) Java 1.5 was only introduced in OSX 10.4. And Mac has not released a Java 1.6 at this stage. Perhaps with the new OSX 10.5 being or soonish released, will mac release a Java 1.6. |
I'll just delete the reference to older Macs in that post. Those people already know they're stuck with orphaned versions of Java and LimeWire so specifying LW 4.13 and up, as it does already, should be enough to avoid any future confusion. |
Hi Aaron, Where would you do that on Windows Vista? It's different to XP |
I think this thread covers that: LimeWire Pref Folder in Vista |
Please help me I wanna put the hostiles file in my DB folder but I dont know what file (the hostiles) is curently update Thank Sorry 4 my english |
BearDiag will install that file for you. ;] |
Is this only for Bearshare or Limewire too? |
Both. LimeWire added the capability to use my list a couple of years ago. :xeri_ok1ani: |
Where do I need to put his BearDiag file ?On my desktop or in Bearshare folder? Where? Thank you |
BearDiag can be run from anywhere on a Windows system so put it wherever you want it and then start it up. |
