Default [Resolved] Internet connections cuts out when Bearshare is running

I had to do a system restore on my computer this week. (I'm an idiot and forgot my password)

I've downloaded Bearshare again but it's running differently to how it used to do.

After about half an hour with bearshare running in the background, my internet connection cuts out. Trying to reconnect doesn't work, I have to restart the computer.

I've tried using the internet without bearshare running and it doesn't cut out at all.

Does anybody know what could be causing this?

Thanks

Why do a system restore? You should have just removed the administrator password.

To late now, but next time go here
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
If you dont want the whole CD then scroll down to the NTFS tools, the first one is the one you would need.

Wink

I felt stuck and rang Sony. They said the only thing to do was a system restore.

Cheers for the link!

There are many reasons for a connection failure, and BearShare is certainly a good way to find the weakest link. ;]

Get BearDiag and post the results.

For starters, the drivers and utilities for your Intel wireless card may need updating.
If you can't find updates for that, give us the model number of that wireless
card and maybe we can find it.

Try uninstalling as much of the Sony window dressing as you can. Only keep
what you actually use because factory installed software like that is usually
pretty weak and buggy.

Better check in at Windows Update to make sure you're patched up too.

In the meantime, go to the Setup menu in BearShare and in the Service tab
put a checkmark in "Never become an ultrapeer". That will temporarily stop
the disconnections, probably. ;]

By the way. In "C:\Program Files\BearShare\db" you'll find "BearShareHostiles.zip".
Unzip it to replace the default hostiles.txt file with my bigger one.
That will shield you from the noisiest of the spammers and worms.

Can you tell me where I can find the model number for the card?

I've not used any of the pre-installed Sony stuff, so I'm in the middle of uninstalling that now.

I already had the "never become an ultrapeer" button switched off too. :-/

As for the BearShare hostiles thing, I can't see a zip file. There's a Hostiles text doc and another BearShare Hostiles file that when opened just brings up something about buying WinZip.

Cheers for your help

That's the right file. Winzip is just trying to sell itself instead of doing what
it's supposed to, which is pretty stupid since Windows XP handles zip files.
Ignore the sales job to install the larger hostiles.txt. If WinZIP won't behave
uninstall it and get this one: www.7-zip.org

The model number of that card should be printed right on it somewhere.
Pop it out and copy all the info you can find.
