Question Error with BearDiag

Have problem not being able to connect to Gnutella network.
Downloaded BearDiag and ran it. Read the fine print and clicked Proceed, then got the following error: (pic attached)

AutoIt Error
Line -1:
Error: Variable must be of type "object".

Tried running BearDiag with and without Bearshare running but get the same error.

No progress dialog? It starts by looking for theOS version, so what OS are you running?

Which version of BearDiag is that? the latest is 1.19.18.

Oh well, it's not important. Your ISP is blocking gnutella lately.
Try µTorrent or Azureus with protocol encryption forced for the next few weeks.

not having much luck with p2p software at the moment. now uTorrent has completely died on me.

so, I formatted my hd and reinstalled XP clean. installed BearFlix. can't connect to gnutella network? even made sure internet connection firewall (ICF) is off just incase that makes a difference.

phoned Tiscali. asked about gnutella. was told that Tiscali do not block anything. when I pushed further got through to a manager who confirmed that in no way do Tiscali block anything.

maybe things will get better after installing SP2. didn't help when I went onto MS update to be told that the update service is unavailable. I'll download from Bearflix - err oh yeah, no gnutella.

a good friend sent these links:
Service pack 1 download
Download Windows XP Service Pack 1: XP SP1 (now called XP SP1a)
Service pack 2 download
Download Windows XP Service Pack 2: XP SP2 (Full package)
All updates from after SP2 to present
WindizUpdate
(use only Firefox to download from 62nds, or it won't work)

he also suggested changing the port number for my client to something else. if I do finally get it fixed I'll post the solution for anyones interest.

Default XP and BS

You really do need to install SP2 for your XP. There are significant changes to the OS (not to mention that even SP2 is 4 or 5 years old). Get that update installed, and then we may be able to help you a bit better, as we'll all be on the same "page" (I run a dedicated BS server using XP Pro and BS 5.1.0b25).

Cheers

Nick

PS - Install any new routers lately? They can and do block Gnutella traffic.

Ok, I've now installed XP Pro with SP2 and all the subsequent MS updates since its release.

Updated the driver for my modem.

Ran BearDIAG - it worked this time. Uninstalled Bearflix and installed the recommended version of BearShare 5.1.0b25.

Changed the port on BearShare to 6350 (friend suggested). There's a note that says that the UDP won't update untill after a restart so I restarted the comp.

Ran BearShare again and still get the unable to connect to gnutella network error.

Ran BearDIAG again, it made some suggestions:

1) Check HD for errors. Done this (inc for system errors). HD is clean.
2) Configure my router. As far as I know I don't have a router. I'm using a modem and not connected to a local network.
3) Configure a static IP address - don't know how to do this.
4) Configure firewall to accept port number. I'm using the built in firewall for SP2. BearShare is allowed. I could also allow TCP and UDP as ports directly, but otherwise that's all the options you get. Also, not sure what UDP port number is (is it the same as TCP?) as this is not said anywhere I've seen.

BearDIAG says there's something wrong with the UDP port. I've attached the BearDIAG report.

Note: it would be odd if this was a firewall issue since it started when I had XP Pro without any firewall enabled (not even the built in ICF).

And all this started after I uninstalled the most current BearShare and reinstalled the old version which had always worked before (for years including in Win98). The new BearShare has killed my old BearShare

nope. didn't work.

i think the problem is occuring before it gets to the stage of reading the connect file.

pic of main screen attached. also noticed that it takes a lot longer to load than before, as if it's timing out somewhere.

Well this is really, really odd. I've been busy for the last week studying for an MCDST exam. Decided to run Bearshare today, and... it's working!!!!

I haven't changed anything in the options. All I've done is install some unrelated software, e.g. Speech Recognition - nothing that needs to connect to the internet. Windows firewall is active.

Well, I wish I could tell everyone what happened to fix this so that if someone else had the problem it would help, but I don't have a clue.

Must be another Microsoft feature
