In our country at least, guns were outlawed for private use many years ago in 1996 with exceptions such as farmers. And an amnesty for people to hand in any guns their possessed. Now it is a mandatory jail term for possessing an unlicensed gun. I think it's 2 years but might be wrong. Gun politics in Australia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Unlike the USA, Australia does not have major firearm producers who are always looking for a market for their product. As far as I know, these companies and the gun lobby have a very high profile and power of persuasion over the USA government. Quote from Wikipedia for UK: 'In England & Wales in 2009 there were 0.073 recorded intentional homicides committed with a firearm per 100,000 inhabitants; for comparison, the figure for the United States was 3.0, about 40 times higher, and for Germany 0.2' If guns were outlawed and tighter control put upon the gun manufacturer companies distribution of weapons, then I suspect gun related fatalities would be dramatically reduced in the USA. |

Guns and Americans Guys I believe that Americans have the constitutional right to bear arms, while there are no other country in the world, I am aware of, that has the same right. I don't believe that there is any disaster or tragedy that will persuade Americans to give up their guns. If anything, the cinema/movie massacre will convince more people that they should have their own guns. Just like bread and butter and/or eggs and bacon Americans will never be parted from their guns (it's just a simple fact). UK Bob |

give up my fekking gun? seriously? you people are complete sheeple....guns give small little pr!cks like me an equal standing when dealing with some 250lb dillhole.... guess it's to far of a fetch for any of you to imagine the outcome in situations where nut jobs have guns had other people also had guns to shoot back... the crime rates in Australia have shot through the roof since they took the guns away from law abiding citizens...I hear criminals in the UK feel they have carte blanche when it comes to their activities...nice...real nice... about the only country I know of where the lack of guns works is Japan, and they are a whole different ball of wax considering their deeply ingrained cultural beliefs... you know what?' I have the RIGHT to deal with some father raping pig who has the gall to break into my house and try and do something...end of discussion...you that think otherwise obviously are misguided and value 'life' far too greatly...some people are simply bad seeds and need to be eliminated for the better good for the rest of us...

Hi Peerless You know, I've missed your acerbic wit and straight forward logic, plus I do agree, somewhat, that if some of those people at the Batman première had guns then the massacre would not have happened. That said, guns are as popular as ever in America, according to a documentary I watched last night (called "The Batman Shootings") yet every few years you still have nutters committing atrocities, i.e. multiple murders in a public place. Yet despite an Americans right to bear arms, I have never heard of a (responsible) gun owner preventing the mass murder of civilians. I believe the problem in America is not the guns themselves but the ease at which unstable people can buy and collect a wide variety of them, for example, why would someone want to own, or allowed to own, guns and automatic weapons a modern army would use. Army-type weapons should not be sold to civilians and gun buyers should under go a psych evaluation before taking ownership. UK Bob |

1: when I first moved to Texas it was a big thing when some nutters decided to go on a rampage in a Luby's (regional buffet type of restaurant...pretty damned good too)...more than a couple of people were also packing and said nutters met his end 2: one of the supposed reasons for the second amendment was the wisdom that perhaps one day we, the citizens of the US, would need to take back the government from corrupt officials...Outside Independence Hall when the Constitutional Convention of 1787 ended, Mrs. Powel of Philadelphia asked Benjamin Franklin, "Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?" With no hesitation whatsoever, Franklin responded, "A republic, if you can keep it." ...sounds like current day to me...and way past time the government was ousted... army type weapons are pretty much illegal...the Batman loser was using a semi-automatic, not a fully automatic weapon... the way I look at it simply is this: history shows us that when the 'government' takes away the right to bear arms it is because they want to enslave the population...as far as Japan..well they've had arms control for ages upon ages upon ages...only Samurai could wear/use swords...any other meant death...the point being that it is, and has been, ingrained into their culture...I for one feel far more comfortable knowing I have the legal right to DEFEND myself in time on need...

Hi Peerless (& other forum members) I looked up the Luby's shootings and found the following: Luby's massacre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I'm not sure if the conclusion of this story proves your point, about possible massacre prevention, but it does show that gun ownership should only be allowed following a psych evaluation. UK Bob PS. I understand that semi-automatic weapons can be very easily converted to fully automatic by the purchase of gun kits, which I understand are legal. how freaking embarrassing...I got the story wrong... I'm now thinking my association with the whole thing is that it was a situation where if people had been allowed to carry the outcome would have been different... sheesh...what a lamer to have made such a statement about history and been totally wrong... :goes off to shoot himself like a good modern samurai with ol' Betty Lou:
