Can anyone tell me please where I can get the codecs to enable me to watch my films on Windows Media Player

CODECs list and alternate players for Movies & might I also recommend getting a backup player which has in-built codecs so if you have any problems, you can use this other player. I'd recommend VLC & you'll find a link to it in the above link.
