I can get MPG, MPEG and MP3 to play on Windows Media Player but not .avi. Could someone tell me why?

You might need codecs for your WMP. Do a search (top right, between faq & home) for codecs, you'll find lots of helpful links

Once you download a divx codec you can watch avi's on WMP. You can download this codec for free at www.divx.com. Click on the Download for Free link where it says "Divx Play".
