An Operating System

Hi, im new to all this so forgive me if I sound dumb.

I have downloaded the above yet when I go to install it it asks ( just like when you buy the disk ) for the serial number. So what am i doing wrong & how do I get round this?

Secondly is it legal?

Please help.

Fistly it is against the forum rules to post name of copyright protected stuff:
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
House Rules.
Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form.

Secondly, your question appears a bit naive, to say the least. Of course it is illigal to "aquire" any software without paying for it (unless it is freeware or shareware)

Please edit your post including the header if possible.

An operating system

Sorry, I didnt know that.

Ok so its illegal, however it has been downloaded on limewire & I then go to install it on my pc. When I then go into word/excel etc it asks me for the seial nimber which is given when you buy the software yeh.

As I havent got that it wont let me proceed! Therefore what is the point of sharing this programme if I cannot then use it?

Excuse me for sounding naive but music is downloaded & shared, stored burned to discs etc so surely isnt it the same concept?

Actually, the concept is to share files......like most weapons have the concept to defend, nevertheless they can also be used to attack.

In your specific case, besides that it was already pretty risky to download such a program from the network considering the fact that most programs (999/1000) incude viruses/worms and trojans, it is/was also unfortunate that the host of the file forgot to provide the necessary "armournition.......

Besides, there are no files uploaded to any server as you might mistakenly believe, files are hosted via the P2P clients and up -or downloaded from the specific computer(s) offering the files (i.e yours and mine)......

You have answered your own question, and besides when you download something you are actually downloading from another P2P users PC and not a LW owned server.

Fabracaz,
I'm guessing you have never heard of Linux (Fedora, Mandriva, SuSE, Ubuntu) all of these are Open Source, Operating Systems. This means they are free, but if you distribute them you have to distribute with your personal changes. MS Windows & Mac OS X however are not Open Source unless you work in designing the Operating System for Microsoft & Apple, hence why everyone else including you will have to pay for it.

Yes, you can download the full Operating Systems via LimeWire, however once you have it installed that's if you find away to get past the cd-key, you won't have any support by Microsoft or Apple, and they will of course can and will press charges for illegal copyright infringes.
