It's probably a codec issue. My suggestion woukd be to Dump WMP and try VLC Media Player. See Last Link.

See Links below.

For XP this codec pac is very good
Download XP Codec Pack 2.0.8 - XP Codec Pack is one of the most complete codec pack

Or for Vista this pac
Vista Codec Package v4.4.7 Beta 4a (freeware)

You can also install the VLC media player, it has all the codecs pre-installed and can play just about all files...
VLC media player - Overview.

Usually the VLC player will play anything and if it doesn't it usually means there is something wrong with the file...

The reason I asked if you where at work was some places have special security that can cause this type of thing to happen...

What is the file's format..ie. AVI etc...

you don't mention any specs, but I've seen this problem on older computers and its caused by 2 factors....the slower cpus have a noticeable effect..and remember this, when you download a file it is spread all over your drive (i.e. its very fragmented)...this means your HDD is constantly searching all over the place for the next bit of data...

and of course its quite possible that its a bogus file...

One other player you can try for such files is MPlayer - The Movie Player but I think you also need to download the extra support library. It is very similar to VLC in abilities but there are some things each can do the other either can't do or does a little better.
