Latest MS Security Update Forum Members Since I installed the latest MS security update (Wednesday morning, 10th March), on my XP Pro PC, I have been unable to open or use my Firefox 3.6 browser. And my not being able to play YouTube videos anymore, using my Opera 10.10 browser, may also be linked to this security update as well. I need to do some more tests to see what else is affected and find out whether this update can be uninstalled, as some of them cannot. Anyway, I wonder if anyone else has experienced problems since installing MS's latest security update. UK Bob |

Very suspicious that it mucks up Opera. (Curious, you use Firefox as well?) I turned off automatic updates; I like to wait 'til others have had a chance to discover any problems. I'll wait for you to tell me when it's safe. Meanwhile, System Restore? The latest patches were to correct vulnerabilities (RCE) in Excel and MS Movie Maker. Possibly some help here: A simple fix for Microsoft Update problems | Tech of all Trades | TechRepublic.com On March 5 Opera announced a vulnerability, caused by a buffer overflow error when processing malformed HTTP "Content-Length:" headers. By exploiting the vulnerability an attacker could make the browser crash or execute arbitrary code by tricking a user into visiting a web page hosted on a malicious web server. Affected are Opera 10.50 and earlier versions. At the moment, there is no patch available, though developers hope to have one very soon. Opera users should avoid visiting untrusted sites and clicking dubious links. Opera still claims to be the fastest browser for PCs, and recently noted three times as many downloads following the new MS Options menu available in the EU (allows users to choose from among a list of browsers). |

Latest MS Security Update (First test) Forum Members As a mini update to my post above, I managed to try out Internet Explorer 8.0 this morning, before leaving for work, to see if it was still OK. Well, lo and behold, IE8.0 remains unaffected and it can still play YouTube videos, while Opera 10.10 still works as a browser but YouTube videos are now inoperative and Firefox 3.6 will not open. All thanks to MS's latest (Patch Tuesday) security update. UK Bob PS. I wonder if this a deliberate act by MS to get people to only use it's IE8.0 browser? |

Blackhorse 70V Just seen your post, like you I do not use MS's automatic updates, I have been caught out in the past by their device driver and WMP updates, also when I lost the use of MS Fax (came free with XP). However, I have never had any problems, until now, with security updates, which are suppose to block security holes and not interfere with non-MS apps (or am I being too naive in this belief). Anyway, as I still use Opera 10.10 (I checked this morning) I will update to 10.50 to see if this cures my non-playing YouTube video problem. In the meantime, I will wait to see of Firefox pushes out a “fix” for this new problem. UK Bob PS. I use Firefox because it has more safety features than any other browser but it's memory usage is quite heavy. PPS. A work colleague recommended Google's Chrome which, he said, has a built in sandbox. PPS. If all else fails then "System Restore" it is. Last edited by ukbobboy01; March 11th, 2010 at 05:59 AM. Security Update Blackhorse 70V Thanks for that bit of info about Chrome, I certainly will not be using it. As for MS's update, I'm not referring to the browser selection that was on offer, I rejected that because I already use three browsers, but the patch Tuesday security update KB975561. I guess I'm going to uninstall it this weekend because this update fixes a problem in MovieMaker, something that I do not use. From now on I going to check what these security updates are for before installing them, I guess that you just can't trust anything MS dish out. Peerless Opera has always had problems with YouTube (and YouTube type) videos because it doesn't use Active X (for security reasons) and so works slightly differently to FF and IE. So hopefully, once I uninstall KB975561, I should be back to normal. UK Bob |

Latest Update on KB975561 Well Guys I couldn't wait so I uninstalled security update KB975561, the good news is that I now have Firefox back and it now works as it did before. The bad news is that my Opera browser still does not play YouTube videos, I can only guess that this update changed something and uninstalling did not put that totally right. Blackhorse 70V I just check the Opera site and there is no V10.5, unless there is beta version your thinking of. So, to get back to where I was before I will have to wait for an Opera update, I can always use FF or IE to play YouTube videos. UK Bob PS. Sorry Blackhorse 70V, I gotta eat some humble pie Opera 10.5 exist, but in my own defence my Opera 10.10 says there are no upgrades available and this morning I could not quickly find any reference to 10.5. However, this lunchtime, I've just seen it and will check it out when I get home. Last edited by ukbobboy01; March 12th, 2010 at 06:44 AM. Reason: Found some extra info. |
