Default Limewire 'Doomed'...?

According to a recent judgment, it may be.

To me it looks like Mark Gorton in a serious power position i.e. dump all charges and I help you turn 50 million users into paying customers.

Ohh... forgot one small thing. The recording industry exec's are the most moronic creatures on Earth, so they won't even see the probable profits.

It's amazing how many 'stand-up' guys lose their legs when they enter a courtroom. And this guy's not even facing criminal charges. I won't be surprised if Gorton ends up working for the RIAA.

Keep your fingers crossed, cootmaster, Frost may yet have its day.

In my oppinion, this is a pretty big blow to p2p, but only because 60% of all p2p users use limewire. Unless the RIAA does something to stop the NETWORKS that these applications use, I really have a hard time seeing an end to p2p. I suppose this would scare a lot of the CEO's and what not of these apps though. Never really thought a lawsuit would ever go through, but seeing that one did for limewire, whose to say it won't for others?

Also, here's an update. http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/201...ire-filtering/

It appears as though they now want to make Limewire into a paying site.

Well BCI

I agree that Limewire seems doomed, once it's creators are put out of business and no more updates or upgrades are forthcoming then Limewire will slowly but surely die.

Whilst each has its own different story, Shareaza and Bearshare were sold out. Quote: "(iMesh 8, Bearshare 7, Lphant 4, and ShareazaV5 are one product.)" Since Bearshare code was not open source we are stranded with the last decent versions of Bearshare 5. Later versions afaik do not even use the gnutella network. (There is at least one privately developed version of Bearshare called Bettershare that is arguably a continuation of the original program on Gnutella.) Likewise Shareaza splintered. Shareaza was open source coding so the coding is still developing for it for the Gnutella network. Whilst versions above Shareaza 4 are equivalent to Bearshare 6 & above, just different label.

Keep in mind LW was never fully developed on it's own, it was always and still is contributions by others. FrostWire was started in the event of LW being sold out. Likewise there are many other LW versions that float around (some for scam sites dare I say it.)

There are other gnutella programs around that are open source and still being developed. Phex is a good example, though due to work commitments by the main dev., I believe development has slowed in recent times.

I'm curious how the Gnutella network itself would develop in future if LW is sold out.

Since most spammers on the Gnutella network use LW, I wonder if one day in distant future we will see a strong suggestive push to block LW; ie: whilst everyone else is using FrostWire, Phex, Gnucleus, Gtk-Gnutella, Bearshare 4/Bettershare, Shareaza 2, Morpheus, etc. ie: blocking LW ultrapeers and uploaders.
That's a bit of a wild thought but depends what happens in future.
