We have been using limewire for a while and now we can't connect and search for anything.

are you behind a router or firewall?
are you connecting from work, home, or school?
have you run the telnet test, to see if your ISP is blocking Gnutella access?

Gnutella (the network that limewire is a client for) is a file sharing network.

People who download stuff without providing anything for upload take away download bandwidth from others without contributing any upload bandwidth. For some bizarre reason there are people who object to this sort of behaviour and call it 'freeloading'.

LimeWire has an option to detect freeloaders and to reduce their downloads by reporting 'file not found' when they attempt to connect.

If you are not already sharing files, you may find that making a few files avaialable increases your downlaod success.

Alternatively, if you can provide some more details of what you are doing (which version of limewire, which operating system, what connection speed, what options you've set, how many search results you are getting, in what way you can't download), then it might be easier to isolate your problem.

Unfortunately "It doesn't work" isn't enough information to give you much constructive help.

That's not quite how the freeloader blocking works. LimeWire only keeps freeloaders from opening incoming connections to your client.

So if only a few Ultrapeers enable that options, it won't have any effect.

When a client sends you a download request via HTTP, it won't tell you how many files it is sharing, so you can't block freeloaders from downloading from you.

Oh. I thought this was the explanation for the 'File Not Found' report on uploads (when the files are quite clearly in my upload area). My understanding was that when an upload request is made then LimeWire checks the address of the sender and sees if they have any files for download - and then returns file not found if there are no files available. But I readily admit this is based on guesswork and the odd comment that I may have misinterpreted.

So, why do so many of my uploads report 'file not found'?

I'm getting the same error. I have over 100 files to share.
Plus I've been using lime wire for months with 0 problems till now.
No fire wall and I use bellsouth DSL.
I have the newest 2.4.2 but still no luck. :(
