Why are there problems with firewalls and proxy's ?????

So many apps like hotline and morpheus to name a couple, use gnuttella and have the ability to go through a proxy server/ firewall (and have had for sometime). I've been trying to use your application at work for along time now because of the amount of stuff on Limewire but have given up because of this limitation. Morpheous for the PC can do it and so can www.hotlinesw.com software for mac and PC, which in comparision to limewire they don't have as much of a following yet!


So please Please for your users sanity and your user ratings get it sorted!!

Limewire can run with firewalls!
you just have to open the port (6346) for limewire to run. no application can run if the needed port is not open.
i don't think proxying is supported by any recent gnutella client.

in limewire you can set the force IP function which in case of a firewall helps others connecting to you. but you still have to open up the right port.
does morpheus run in your office???
if so try gnucleus it's free and gnutella like morpheus was just forked off of it.

I am running WinXP Pro (internal grumblings aside) and until the 2.2.3 version I was able to connect without any problems. I am able to use Gnucleus with limited success. But what blows my mind is the fact that I can connect to the Gnutella network with Gnucleus but am 100% unsuccessful with LimeWire. I prefer LimeWire, as do a couple of users in my office. Our network is not standalone, but is connected to the backbone of a vast network and I am still trying to understand how Gnucleus succeeds to connect where LimeWire does not.

I have tried forcing my IP address to a lower port, but that is also unsuccessful. I know the entire network has 'sealed off' a number of higher port ranges, probably in an effort to discourage use of these clients. Is there any way to provide alternate ports to connect to?

set your port to 80 and try to connect. port 80 should be open for the http protocol. good luck

But will it allow PPP through port 80? My feeling is that it's probably restricted to http to make it easier to configure who on the network is allowed to use particular ports and, hence particular services like HTTP, FTP, PPTP, etc.

And since Gnucleus is very sporadic as to whether it works, I've hit the jackpot with WinMX. So for all of you who are having difficulties, there is a real working alternative out there.

A better utility for networks

I have port 6346 open and still can't connect. Yes, I am at work so am behind a firewall, but other people here can connect with no problem.

The only client I know, that can tunnel through HTTP/SOCKS proxies (more or less successful) is gtk-gnutella and it's available for linux only.
