Default Limewire is bullshit

I've been trying to connect from my brand new mac g4 with t1 one line at school. The green online connection button flashses for a second and then it ***** out. I'm not even supposed to download gnutella at school, I'm just trying to get it running.

What the hell do I have to do just to connect it?

Hello,

Your school's network may be blocking Gnutella traffic. If you know how, try to telnet to 64.61.25.171 port 6346 and let me know if it says "Gnutella OK" if it does not, you cannot use LimeWire from that internet connection.

Unhappy

I've been havine the same connection problem lately also. The green spot would flash for a second and then go back to red. If I let it sit for a while, Limewire would eventually connect but my downloads are much slower now. I live in a dorm at school and they have blocks also, but they only slow down your connection and you can turn them off. My school doesnt have a block on mac run file-sharing. I think it is just a bug in Limewire.

Angry Can't Connect w/ LAN either

I can't connect either w/ a LAN in a dorm . I'm using an iBook w/ OS 10.1.2. I ran the telnet test and got "Gnutella OK" but still can't connect. A PC friend down the hall ( on the same LAN) uses WinMx and downloads up the yin-yang and WinMx is also a peer-to-peer.

My question is this: If my telnet test DID show "Gnutella OK" and my PC friend can download through our school's LAN using a peer-to-peer app, why won't Limewire ( either Pro version OR basic 2.5.5 - I've tried both) work on my Mac?

Is it a Gnutella-specific thing?

I also downloaded BrickHouse and set it to "accept Gnutella traffic" ( which apparently un-blocks your firewall if need be) and that did nothing.

At this point I really don't know what to do.
My school's IT dept. set up my Network control panel ( system pref) with several different IP addresses: an IP address, a Subnet mask address, a Router address and my Ethernet address.

Do any of these have anything to do w/ configuring Limewire to work w/ the LAN / Ethernet network?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!!

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Gnutella OK should indicate that you can freely communicate with the Gnutella network thus indicating your local connection is not being blocked by the school firewall etc..

I am not a regular MAC user but I would suggest you uninstall Limewire and re-install it that should corract any flaky setting that might exist withing Limewire... you appear to have ruled out any problems outside of your computer.

I don't think any of this would impact your issues with Gnutella... they are basic configurations. If you can funtion on the network in other ways, and the "Gnutella test" came back OK you appear to have ruled out these issues.

Thanks for the info / suggestions, but unfortunately - none worked. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling both 2.5.5 and the Pro version several times.

I can't keep a connection for longer than a few seconds. Get green light, it quickly goes to red. Then goes back to green. Then back to red. Endlessly.

Also, my friend on a PC using WinMx said her WinMx gave her an option to reconfigure TCP/IP settings to accept incoming TCP traffic ( ie: file sharing with WinMx on a PC) .

Is this something I should try in my Mac System Preferences?
If so, how should I reconfigure them to accept Gnutella?

Thanks again =)

Well TCP traffic is the primary form of connection used on the internet/IP ... the other big player is UDP... the biggest difference being is TCP extablishes a connection so there is true handshaking for data integrity where UDP is sent with no guarantee that the date arrived intact... I cannot imagine that you are not using TCP.... I haven't used WinMX recently... I may look into it's setup to see what I can find out there... I don't think that would be your problem though. IF I were you I would post this question in the Limewire / MAC section in hopes of snagging the attention of a knowledgable MAC user as this may very well be an issue regaring using a MAC.
