There are two different bandwidths: one for uploading and one for downloading. While uploading will help your donwload speeds, unless you're trying to upload to, like, a 100 peers (I'm exaggerating), then uploading won't slow down your downloads.
If you are disconnected, what you'll share is the uploads that were active at the point of the disconnection, meaning thatif you have 3 uploads and disconnect, you'll still upload until the uploads are finished, cut-off or you quit LW.
From that point of view, disconnecting will cut off other incoming seaches and also outgoing searches (you won't be able to search).
By "when Limewire is off", I suppose you mean when you have quit Limewire? In that case, Limewire won't upload or download anymore. Think about it: it's almost like asking "If my Mac is turned off, how do I know that it's not still running?" Weird, huh?
As for the Firewall thing, with the two Firewalls up, go to Limewire's Preferences, and click Bug Reports. Click the button to get an example then scroll down to the part where it says: "recieved incoming this session". If it says true then your firewalls are not blocking LW. If it says false then they are.

Oh, and the "check the Bug reports" also concerns the very first Unregistered of this thread.

You still have the 10.2.3? Why don't you update it to 10.2.8? Run a system update. There may even be a security update or two or maybe a java updater that you haven't got.

10.2.3 really means 10.2.8

In case you're wondering why I'm not using Panther, well I bought it and it worked fine until I upgraded to 10.3.5 or whatever, then Safari wouldn't work.

Also, about the Latest Panther, try installing it again from the CD then reinstalling the updates. It is not the first time I hear about someone doing a software update only to find that it kinda screwed up their previously working Mac.

Port 6346 Intruders After Limewire Shutdown
 

Another firewall question!

I get people attempting access to my computer (through port 6346) a whole lot nowadays -- long, long after I shut down LimeWire, even if I shut down while no uploads are ... uploading. I mean TONS of attempts, like 50-100 every ten minutes. Coincidence? I mean LimeWire uses 6346 and ... well I had Norton running before and I never got anywhere near the number of access attempts, and the few I got were not all 6346 attempts.

Thoughts? Ideas?

EDIT: It just occured to me: maybe these people just have nothing else to do so they look for firewalled computers to try their hacker hands on. Since LW's port is the one that's "open", that's probably also the easiest to access/break/whatever.
Either that or you have some really really coool stuff in your Mac that everyone wants.
