Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences. File names are not required to discuss your issues. If filenames are copyright then do not belong on these forums & will be edited out or post removed. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated. Commercial advertising is not allowed in any form, including using in signatures.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator. There are specific Gnutella Client sections for LimeWire, Phex, FrostWire, BearShare, Gnucleus, Morpheus, and many more. Please choose the correct section for your problem.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning. Keep in mind a forum censor may temporarily automatically hold up your post, if you do not see your post, do not post again, it will be dealt with by a moderator within a reasonable time. Authors of multiple copies of same post may be dealt with by moderators within their discrete judgment at the time which may result in warning or infraction points, depending on severity as adjudged by the moderators online.

10. Posts should have descriptive topics. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick. Reiterating, do not post your email address in posts. This is for your own protection.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit or used for commercial advertising. Commercial weblinks cannot be used under any circumstances and will result in an immediate ban.

13. Dual accounts are not allowed. Cannot explain this more simply. Attempts to set up dual accounts will most likely result in a banning of all forum accounts.

14. Video links may only be posted after you have a tally of two forum posts. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam.

15. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

Question Similar Problem

I apologize for "latching" onto your thread, since I don't have a solution, but I do have a similar problem.

I left LimeWire running today, but "Disconnected" when I left the house for several hours because I thought my firewall (ZoneAlarm) would kick in. When I came back home, and went to reconnect, I was surprised my Monitor screen showed a few new uploads. The red "Disconnect" light was still lit as I had left it, and more wierd, my firewall hadn't kicked in after the ten minute "no activity" setting I have it set at. I'm assuming continuous searches and passes had continued for the four hours I was gone, as it was the only App open.

It's no big deal -- I'm glad members found what they wanted -- but I'd have never given a thought to rebooting (and possibly dumping uploaders) since I thought I was disconnected.

Hope we get some answers to your post!

I'm guessing both of you are on dsl/cable or higher. Also guessing when you connect to other hosts you get a big *** horizon. So you're "connected" to a lot of people. You open LimeWire for a minute and get 400 queries and say you have 200 that match your files. You "disconnect" and leave the app open and walk away. Come back and see you're uploading files to other hosts. Well when you "disconnected" the only thing you prevented were further queries. Those people who got those 200 search results back from you are searching through the list to find a good host to download from. Since you have the LimeWire (app) still open, people can still connect to you. B/c the port 6346 (or whatever you use) is still open and ready for a connection. They'll find a good connection and start downloadin. Thats why that happens. I use Freedom http://www.freedom.net and it lets people connect as long as I'm using LimeWire but once I close LimeWire it starts blocking.

Good job man. I wish we had more people like you. Keep it up!

Thanks, Unregistered! That makes so much sense, and thank you for clearly explaining it. I may just leave a connection open to help out Gnutella, but people like you that take the time to answer questions are really the backbone of the system. Thanks again!

Thank you. I'm scud by the way. I forgot to enter my nick. I love explaining a wonderful technology to intelligent people who want to learn and understand it. That makes me feel good that others acknowledge my efforts. Thank you again.

Scud,

Please help. I understand that people behind firewalls can't access my system because I'm behind a firewall. I'd really like to be able to share files.

I've posted a request for help on the export IP command.

I'm behind a firewall.

If you see this, would you please look at my post with subject "Export IP?"

I'm adding here because I don't know any other way to get attention to my post

Thank you very much!

Hey check out the tutorial I wrote on getting gnutella to work even if you're not directly connected to the internet.

Mike,

Thank you very much for your post. I really appreciate the response.

I checked your document. It is awsome for the average Windows user with a small home network; possibly using Windows 98 sharing?

I'm on a fairly small network, too. My firewall is Linux Mandrake 7.2. While I understand the basics and am aware of most everything in your document, it doesn't give any pointers on IPChains.

Can you offer any input for my scenario?

Thanks!

Default Sharing While Disconnected

[I have an eMac running 10.2.8 and I now use (lemme go look) LimeWire 4.0.7. I plan on getting pro in a few days when I can afford it. I have the built-in firewall running. I have cable internet.]

Anyway I'm totally lost. I just started doing the whole Limewire thing like three days ago and the more I read the more confused I get.

So I understand you can still share while you're disconnected. What's the point of disconnecting then? Frankly I don't care if people get stuff off my computer the entire 10-odd hours a day I have it on and don't need to conserve bandwidth (whatever bandwidth is). I don't even care if people come into my house when I'm sleeping and copy all my CDs as long as they leave a cookie. But I would like to have the option to turn sharing OFF if I wanna email someone thirty 10MB files all at once. I do not think I am in any way stingy but I would like to know what exactly is happening with my computer. I mean it IS mine. Mac people have the tendency to leave tons of applications running because of how sturdy OSX is, but do I need to close LimeWire to be sure I'm not uploading? And while we're on the topic, how does someone like me who doesn't know squat about computers know I'm not uploading when LimeWire is off?

Mr. and/or Ms. Unregistered said:

"I use Freedom http://www.freedom.net and it lets people connect as long as I'm using LimeWire but once I close LimeWire it starts blocking."

So I need to worry about having a firewall because people might be snooping around on my computer even when LimeWire is turned off -- does this have anything to do with the fact that I now use LimeWire sometimes or is it because the internet is just unsafe in general, even for someone who's never heard of LimeWire?

I just got cable internet a few days ago, and before that I never downloaded or uploaded anything at all, so if I seem ignorant, well I am.

If anyone knows that the answers I'm looking for can already be found somewhere please redirect me. I tried searching but I'm not even sure I know enough of the terminology to search effectively.

Love ya guys!

Default Now Norton Allows Access ... huh ??

OK now I just put Norton Firewall on my computer just for fun and I turned off ALL access ... yet people are downloading files from my computer.

What gives?

FYI, MY COPIED/PASTED BASICS:
(1) I have an eMac running OS X 10.2.3.
(2) I have two firewalls I play around with out of boredom: the OS X built-in firewall and Norton Personal Firewall 1.0.2.
(3) I use LimeWire 4.0.7.
(4) I will get LimeWire Pro when I have some cash. I believe in supporting LimeWire and carrying my own weight.
(5) I got cable internet just days ago. Before that I downloaded nothing but 120 KB pictures from my favorite movie fan-sites.
(6) I'm very new to all this and I know I'm ignorant. Hopefully this is temporary. If you would like to make fun of me that's totally cool, but please be constructive and don't think you're not shooting fish in a barrel.
(7) I may or may not know enough terminology at this early stage to search these forums effectively. I ask questions only after making a sincere effort to find answers beforehand. If I'm asking a question that insults you, I will be neither hurt nor offended if you point this out. I would LIKE you to point this out. Just don't mistake stupidity and lack of common sense for laziness.
