Default slow download speeds

I just recently installed LimeWire after using BearShare with the same end results - using AT&T/Comcast cable service on Win98 platform, no additional firewalls/routers installed.

Getting really slow (<30 kbs) download speeds across the board. Tried different port settings, no luck. Was wondering if it was just the sites I was connecting to that had set a hard limit on bandwidth, or am I doing something wrong? I haven't read anything on any of the gnutella forums re: cable internet specifically firewalling access at their level and passing it along to users. PCpitstop says I'm capable of 2000+ kbs speeds.

Any suggestions?

Hi:

I don't think you have a problem.

Remember you can only download at your hosts upload ability. Also a lot of connections are not reported correctly. Look for a Cable/DSL host that is shown in green. That indicates a high probability it is truely a cable or DSL connection. Also, hosts may have several uploads in process at the same time and the bandwidth is being shared or a host may only allow a small portion of bandwidth to uploads. I have DSL and rarely connect over 30 kbs. I also often have up to my set limit of 8 uploads in process at once. That means I only have about 8 kbs available per client. If I am using the internet I am also using bandwidth.

You can verify the bandwidth if you have several downloads in process at the same time. If you have ten consecutive downloads going at 6 kbs you are drawing down 60 kbs.
