'on any programs'...

if that includes your web browser, ftp program, e-mail program, then you're most likely not connected to the internet at all.

what connection do you have?

if by 'any programs' you refer to other file sharing programs (kazaa, other gnutella clients, emule etc.), then it could be an issue with your router or firewall.

but, then, it would really help to know whether you have a firewall or a router.

and also:
what OS?
what version of limewire?

also: have you read the faq?

good luck!

ok, we're getting closer.

so, I assume you can surf the web, but kazaa, limewire etc don't work. yes?

how are you connected to the internet?

modem/dial-in
cable
dsl
corporate lan?

mikeyrave1111 May 13th, 2003 05:04 PM

im on cable ... and i dont have a router or firewall cuz i have the only computer in teh house !

osu_uma May 13th, 2003 05:20 PM

you said you also tried other file sharing programs and they didn't work either?

but web surfing works?

that sounds totally like a firewall to me. when the green dot blinks only briefly, that usually means that there is no connection to the internet.

are you using any other internet-related software, security tools etc.?

does your provider possibly block filesharing programs?

sorry... i wouldn't know anything else.

Same problem

Hey. I hear what you're saying about the connection problems...I had limewire on my other computer and it was dsl connection, and it still wouldnt connect. It seemed to connect only when it wanted to.. Most of the time if i left my aol, (or whatever internet connection device), on and left limewire running, eventually i'd find it had turned green... Now i downloaded pro on a new computer and im having the red problems again, and cant get rid of it. I read the FAQs and a bunch of stuff on Limewire.com and it said that the more you use limewire, the easier it is to make the light green. Normally, I'd get frustrated and say they dont know what they're talking about, BUT i do know this is true from my past experience from limewire...So advice:
1. dont reinstall unless you have another problem
2. whenever connected to the internet, load limewire (even though the light is red)
3. eventually the more exposure to the internet will allow limewire to start.
4. you have to be connected to the internet. If you have high speed internet, and can start internet explorer or netscape from your desktop, then you have an automatically connected modem, and you should be able to load limewire. If you try to start internet explorer or netscape and get a "cannot find server" message, it means you have another connection thing, like AOL or something that you MUST sign on to first to be able to get ANY connection to limewire.

Sorry this was so long, and hey, I totally feel your frustration. Dont resort to Kazaa, tho. I used Kazaa for maybe a year and had to replace TWO computers from viruses that i found out later came from Kazaa. I'm not saying its bad, but I personally have had bad luck with it. Limewire is the program ive never had trouble with, ever. Like always, dont open emails you dont know who theyre from. Stay with limewire, hang in there. If you need other advice on another music download program, email me at vicksie411@aol.com and i will help you, but i do NOT recommend any other program than Limewire. Try to stick in there!

it seems there are two separate kinds of problems:

1) limewire can't establish connections to hosts right away. in the 'connections' tab, there's a whole bunch of hosts either 'connecting' or 'handshaking'. in this case, limewire should eventually establish a connection and the dot should turn green.

2) brief green dot, then red again, and nothing happening in the 'connections' window. there may be more than one reason for this but it definitely happens when you're not connected to the internet. i am suspecting that some users who connect to the internet through a modem open limewire before they're dialled in. but there may be other reasons, too

grrr

I am running Windows XP. Have Norton Firewall configured to allow file sharing through LimeWire, still no go. Green dot for nanosecond, then red dot. And the stupid program keeps asking if I want to purchase the darned thing.

It asks at every startup. Ya gotta deal man.

Do you have a hardware firewall in addition to your software firewall? If so, set it up to allow LW's ports through.
