Can't connect

Hi everybody.

I just downloaded & installed LimeWire V1.5 -- and it just does not connect to ANY server. There is NO error reported (is there a log file ? i can't find it).

I already tried to find a solution, but:

* I read the FAQ, but it gives only very general information on firewalls.

* I also tried Phex, and it just says "Connection Refused".

* I first suspected my firewall (BlackICE), so i opened port 6346 -- with NO EFFECT.

* So i disabled the firewall -- still the same problem.

* I tried to connect to router.limewire.com:6346 -- IT WORKS - even with the firewall on !!! (to try this, i used a little java-tool i wrote).

I just don't know what i do wrong. Please Help !

Some System detail:

Platform: Pentium 2 / W2K SP2 / JRE 1.3.1
Connection: DSL, PPPoE, BlackICE Firewall

Has anybody any idea ?!

Please mail me at dk@brainon.ch, if i find a solution, i'll post it here.

More Myteries (REPLY To SELF)

Hello again !

After my deperate post yesterday, I now had had some success:

I removed all spyware using lavasofts ad-aware (get it at www.lavasoftUSA.com) -- i'm not sure wether this had any impact, but it's nice to be rid of those nasty parasites anyway.

Hint: It took ad-aware 2 passes (and a reboot) as admin and another pass as "me" to completely get rid of all spys.

It NOW WORKS, but only if i LOG IN AS ADMIN ! -- if i start it from my normal user-account, it still wount connect, even if i use "execute as" (similar to sudo/sus on unix/linux) to give it admin-rights !!! (i did not try admin-rights before removing the spy-ware).

Oh, right: it works (as admin) despite of BlackICE AND ZoneAlarm running !

Are there any env-variables/setup-files/etc involved, that could be different for different users ?!

I STILL wan't to work/download as ordenary user, esp. BECAUSE of spyware/viruses/trojans/etc.

Anyone PLEASE HELP !

TIA
daniel

Solved It (AM I TALKING TO MYSELF ?)

Ok, my last post.

I solved the probelm -- or rather, after another logout/login after my previous post, the problem solved itself... IT NOW WORKS FINE ! (i'm not sure why it didn't before)

Just to mentione it: The spyware i removed included new.net and webhance -- THEY SHALL BURN IN HELL !

Both Phex and LimeWire work well now... Most downloads fail, but i guess that's just the way it is...

I know it's kind of a BAD THING to alsk for help in a forum and then to discover that I could have solved the problem on my own... however, i think i'm not the only one having this trouble (in fact, i got mail from at least one person having that problem), and so this "monologous" thread meight be helpfull anyway. Just read it as a "report of experience" :-)

ok, tnx anyway folx,
'till the next bug,
dk

P.S.: In the process i discovered another STRANGE THING:

I installed the IBM-JDK a while ago, but i couldn't get it to work (i allways got "Connection Refused" Exceptions when ANY programm tried to connect to ANYWHERE, even localhost.

So i switched back to Sun's JDK (Yes, i did run Phex/LimeWire using Sun's JDK !), that worked fine (just Phex/LimeWire didn't, which was the reason for the original post).

NOW, SURPRISE: The IBM-JDK now works fine ! I guess it was also iterfering with some Spyware. I just wonder why this kind of intrusive virus-ware is legal... is there nothing we can do ?! You know, i HATE script-monkys, but in cases like this, one can get tempted... what was the name of that DDoS-program again ?

chears.
