Question Trying to connect for first time

I just downloaded limewire (free version 3.6.15) and java2 from your website. The download and program installations went fine, but I can't seem to connect ( using connect tab under File tab) when I'm online(Disconnected/ no files available). I'm using win xp home and my service provider is earthlink(56k dial up modem) and I use earthlink's browser. Does earthlink prevent using file sharing programs?

I closed the lw program and deleted the .limewire settings folder, as suggested on this board. I also went to the tools tab and unclicked the connect at startup option as someone suggested. Still no connection.

I'd sure like to know what my options are for connecting, or if I just can't get there from here.

Make sure that your firewall (if you have one) allows connections. If you are on a network, gnutella might be blocked. Or your ISP might block file shareing. If that is not the case than you can try the latest beta. http://www.limewire.com/english/content/beta.shtml

Also, try unchecking the option to start LimeWire everytime you reboot:
look for tools->options->startup or something
