Question Another "connection problem" question.

Hi. My friend suggested using Limewire, so I installed it and, for the first couple of days, it worked perfectly.
Now it won't connect. I try to connect but the red dot changes to green for a second, then goes red again (the dot next to where it says how many files you're sharing). I'm connected to broadband and I've even tried changing my firewall to minimum security settings, but I still can't connect.
I am completely computer-illiterate, so any suggestions in really basic English would be greatly appreciated. I read somewhere about deleting .limewire-something, but I didn't understand!
Please help, there's so many tunes I want to download and this is really getting on my wick! Thanks :-)

Which firewall are you using?

Firewall.... Symantec. But it's always been enabled and Limewire worked fine when I first had it. I'm also using XP, if that makes any difference?

XP has a build in firewall:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p...orking/icf.asp

Try to disable both firewalls, only to be see if they are causing the problem or not.

Did you remember if you changed anything (not only within Limewire also XP, firewall)? Did you install any other programs short between the time Liewire worked and didnīt work anymore? Do try to connect from home or from work? Are you within a LAN? Do you have a router?

Hello :-) I haven't installed anything else, or changed any settings, since I installed Limewire.

I really don't want to disable my firewall as this will leave my computer open to attacks, but I suppose for a minute will be okay. I use it at home (am in work right now) so will try this later.

Not within a LAN and don't know what a router is, so I guess not using one!

Donīt worry, a firewall protect you more against programs that are trying to connect from your computer than from outside attacks. Which hacker should hack your computer? Are you rich do you have top secrets on your computer?

And believe me if he wants to hack you, do you really think a firewall will protect you?

It always good to have a firewall but we shouldnīt be to much paranoid!

Try it and we will see whta happens.

Well I never - that worked... I just need to disable the firewall when I connect to Limewire, then enable it again - cool!

Thanks very much for your help!
