For Those Who Can't Connect, Part Deux

For those who are having trouble connecting to the Gnutella network using LimeWire, we have a potential fix (as described in the previous thread). You need to delete your WHOLE LimeWire preferences directory. To do that, please run the attached jar file - for most users, simply downloading and double clicking on the jar should do the trick. If that doesn't work (or if the jar is opened with your default archive program), go to the first thread on this topic.

Please shutdown any instance of LimeWire you may have running, run the attached jar, and then restart LimeWire. You should be able to connect.

I'd love to hear how this works for everyone.

Thanks!

Eh, any idea what problem we're to run the jar with? o.O I double click the file and it does nothing, and it hasn't helped my connection problem..

Program, not problem. :-\

sdaswani April 18th, 2004 05:59 AM

What OS are you using? Can you bring up a command line or terminal and type:

java -jar purger.jar

in the directory you have the file saved?

Thanks!

java -jar purger.jar doesn't work

I have tried this method without success and I don't seem to be getting any help elsewhere. Any chance you could help. See my thread in connection problems.

Exception in the thread "main" java.lang. NoSuchMethodError at LimeWireSettingsPurger.main(LimeWireSettingsPurger .java:54)

Thanks

hmmm, i am probably using methods that are not java 1.3 or 1.2 compatible. i'll fix this up and post a new purger ASAP.

sorry!!!

I have the purger in my Limewire Folder, and I made my way through Command Prompt until I was in that directory, then I typed the command and it said:

Registry key 'Software\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment\CurrentVersion' has value '1.4', but '1.3' is required.
Error: could not find java.dll
Error: could not find Java 2 Runtime Envorionment.

Connection is hushed

We just installed Limeware on an XP PC. When we open up the program, it says "disconnected, no files available" at the top. If we go to file, the next choice "connection" is hushed.

On a lark, I tried this jar fix, but it did not help. My problem may be a lot more basic.

For what it's worth, If I go to my LAN connection, and go to the advanced tab, I see choices about Internet Connection firewall, but there is no mention of Internet Connection Sharing. Could that be the problem? If so, how to get it?

sdaswani April 20th, 2004 07:32 AM

is your internet connection firewall enabled? that may be part of the issue.

Are you using the built in firewall? If not, you should also check it.

Many people donīt know that XP has a built in firewall.

Connection probems for LimeWire Pro

I have Windows XP. I use Internet Explorer and I get my service through Cox Broadband. My LimeWire always says "disconnected". When I go to "File" and select "Connect", LimeWire says "connecting" for 2 seconds and then returns to "disconnected."

So far I have tried all of the following:
I have disabled Norton Internet Security
I have disabled my Windows XP personal firewall.
I have deleted the preferences folder of LimeWire
I have also run java - jar purger.jar

I am running out of ideas. I can't believe it is this difficult to connect. Should I try a different product?

I followed both the first and second string (deleting .limewire directory AND running the link) to no avail. I also added 'gnutella' in my LAN settings, as directed.

Still no connect. Send more help!

SDASWANI, you wanted to know how your 'jar' fix worked. It doesn't! I am hoping you will tap into your software engineer expertise once again in an additional attempt to resolve this problem.

Again, I downloaded the 'jar' file, deleted settings, and tried again to connect. No luck!

NOTE: There is a little red icon dot in the lower left corner of the page. I noted that, when I click on 'connect,' that light turns green for a fraction of a second, and immediately reverts back to red.

Are you any closer to finding a solution to this problem?

Connection problems

Ach, HELP with Connection problems!

I have read through both threads on this subject and tried all suggested fixes.

Oddly enough, I do not have the "advanced" tab available for my LAN settings, so I am unable to verify if Microsoft firewall is enabled. However, I believe it is not. I do have Norton personal firewall running, but have not been able to get it allow Limewire to connect. I tried adding javaw.exe to the allowed list (as suggested by the Limewire web site), but that didn't work.

If I disable norton personal firewall I am still unable to connect.

Please someone help.

still not connecting

I used the purger and I've deleted the preferences directory myself. I'm running OS X. The connection problem didn't start happening until I updated my java to JRE 1.4.2. Could that be related? Strange.

If you have not already done so, see if downloading the latest version (4.0.4) of LW will help.

Worked for me

I had windows xp and zone alarm firewalls running, so I couldnt
connect. I closed both firewalls, and still no dice. I rebooted and
tried to connect again still nothing. I was pissed. Than something
hit me, even with zone alarm shut down there still are problems with Limewire. Then it hit me. Uninstall zone alarm, presto instant connection.

Kfiler May 30th, 2004 06:55 AM

Having your port forwarded through any router/firewall on your cable modem is very important.

Even if you can talk to the gnutella network through a firewall you will not be able to get many files because most other people are behind firewalls.

Two firewalled people can't "push" or share files with each other.

So if you want faster and more downloads, learn how to port forward. It's not all that hard to do.

spiers June 30th, 2004 03:52 AM

I cant connect either. Ive also lost my downloads now because people telling me i had to delete the .limewire program. I have configured three firewalls to work with limewire and it aint working. It used to stay disconnected for about 30 mins then connect but now ive been waiting 3 hours and it wont connect. Ive copied my incomplete folder so i can send it back which is ok i reckon. What do i do? Is it because i dont have Pro? the network it refusing me. Ive also started to share large numbers of files but it still dosent connect!

connection problems--I tried everything!

Hi, thanks in advance for any help you can offer:

I recently downloaded Limewire 4.0.7 and successfully installed it, but the problem is it doesn't connect. I have a wireless network connection (WLAN) and the internet works fine. I use Windows XP. The firewall on windows is turned off. This computer came preinstalled with Norton Anti-Virus 2003, but that program doesn't seem to have a firewall anyway (if it does, please tell me how to turn it off!). I tried deleting the .limewire preferences directory, as recommended, but that didn't help. I also downloaded the jar file and double clicked on it, but nothing happened. The jar file didn't open, nor was the connection fixed when I restarted limewire. I've tried connecting on different ports, but that doesn't seem to work either.

Please help!

POSSIBLE CONNECTION-SOLUTION!!!

Hello Everyone, because I couldn't connect either, I've read this forum and tried everything. First I discovered the same problem as some of you:

LimeWire worked with me after I had done the following:

- exit LimeWire (also in taskbar)
- delete the preferences directory
- download the 'jar' file, and open it in Winzip
- extract it to the LimeWire directory (2 files will be added to the directory)
- I also shut down Norton Internet Security, but I think that won't be necessary.

After I had done all this, I started LimeWire......and it connected!!!
First, the connection was 'poor' but later on it became 'good'.

I hope this helps for more people. Good luck!!!

So why am I paying this money and not getting any help? I see all these people with the same problem. Windows XP going, try to connect, stays on for a nano-second and then disconnects. I want answers and I want music. I mean, what's up, really. This is ridiculous. Yes, I've tried the fix, then the next fix, then the one after that. Yes, I've dealt with the firewalls and the uninstalling. I just want something to work, please, what about this 100% money back guarantee?

Connection... what's that.

After reading 3 pages of posts, or whatever they're called, I'm no closer than anyone else. I do not understand half of the computer speak that's being used, which makes it that much more infuriating that I cannot connect. Gone are the days when we could download Kazaa Lite in about 25 seconds, and 5 minutes later have an entire album on file. All I want to know is this: Where on God's green earth may I download music? Evidently not here. I apologize for being harsh, but this is absolutely ridiculous. And I almost spent 18 bucks. Many of these questions I've read tonight are months old... who is helping us?

I run windows 2000 professional, and I do NOT have firewalls period. I am permanently connected through an LAN provider. LimeWire still will not connect after attempting all of these procedures. I would suggest maybe the developing team of this program go back to the drawing board because the new version does NOT work !

daduh August 14th, 2004 05:40 PM

tried and failed...

im using XP... its updated... java is updated too and ive tried every version of LW... program starts up... then shuts down seconds later... any suggestions... nothing on the forums that i have tryed has worked so far... so i dont know what to do at this point..

Lord of the Rings August 14th, 2004 10:43 PM

daduh are you sure it's not a firewall issue? XP has it's own firewall. It needs to be set to allow java & LW to pass! To quote the child of the Olympics God, murasame Go to Limewire->Preferences and click on the Bug Reports selection. There, click for an example and scroll down to the part where it says: Recieved incoming this session. If it says true then Limewire does not have a problem from Firewall. If it says false, Firewall(s) are blocking the connection. I hope this helps in figuring the cause of your problem.

I also could not connect after following all the suggestions.
I found my Norton Anti-virus was blocking the connection even though "automatic program control" was enabled.

I have probably spent about4 hours reading and trying all the fixes none have worked I spent 29.95 for this I'm so frustrated I have win 2000 pro I don't know what else to do I have norton virus and firewall but i disabled both of them. All I want is 2 songs for a meeting tomorrow I should have just bought them.

I have a time constraint so If anyone out there could download and send to me 2 songs I would really appreciate it the songs are the love of money by the O Jay's and Eye of the Tiger by Survivor please send to *** thank you

Lord of the Rings August 27th, 2004 09:59 PM

I can't answer your last part b/c it is against the forum rules to post such questions & answers.

Did you pay $29.95 US dollars for LW Pro? If yes, where did you purchase it from? The price of LW Pro is only $18.88! You should only purchase LW Pro at the official website which is: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml

See this thread: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...5&pagenumber=3 & if see if this applies to you.

I forgot to mention earlier, in the meantime try out the standard free version 4.0.8 or the beta 4.1.5(see http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...hreadid=27672.)

Lord of the Rings August 28th, 2004 02:37 PM

connections....

I, too, am having connection problems. I have read the threads, tried deleting the .limewire folder, check the place where it tells you if you have recieved info this session-true- which tells me it isn't a firewall problem. I noticed that my Shareaza won't connect either, both quit about the same time... I have Windows XP, am on a wireless ISP, have AVG and WinPatrol. I am wondering if my ISP started blocking P2P - what with all the furor over them lately- I sent them an e-mail, and (conveniently) have had no response... I don't know what else to do to connect. I DO know that all users need to get a grip on your frustrations when it doesn't work, quit being verbally abusive to the developers/staff. They work their butts off to make this stuff work, it's way over my head, and I am amazed it works as well as it does. So take a deep breath, walk around the house three times, then sit down and see if we can logically work through it...:)
