In the last couple weeks, When I log onto Limewire, it establishes a quick connection, but it's always with the same hosts, begininng in 137.45, which is the start of my IP address as well. Becuase of this, my searching is limited.

A pop up sometimes appearing saying I either don't have a internect connection or I have a firewell. But I checked my firewall to ensure it is disabled as it has always been and it is.

What Can I do?

It's good to connect to others near you (locale preferencing).

56k modems (even broadband) can also choke on the number of connections that may be needed if you have a lot of incomplete files and downloads trying to connect. Clean kill the downloads and clean up the incomplete folder and see if that helps.

Thanks for the reply. Basically, these are the IP adresses my limewire conntects to: 137.47.74.219; 137.45.61.84; 137.45.65.25; 137.45.61.229; 137.45.76.180; 137.45.67.33. If I drop these connections, it picks them back up immediately. Before, I used to get IP addresses that weren't similar (though somtimes the connection wasn't as stable, but that was okay); back then, searching was better and I could find nearly anything I wanted. The only thing good about my hosts now is that limewire nevers drops the connection.

Is thier anyway to change or add the host that it looks up so I get more variety.

I cleaned out my incomplete files. I did notice in the incomplete folder, there were two documents called download DAT, which uses to be in shared, but isn't anymore. Is this a problem?

Hmm. I can't ping any of those addresses. How do you connect to the internet (56k/ cable/ethernet from home/school/work/LAN)?

btw--the downloads.dat and downloads.bak files store the info about partial downloads (like a map or index of what pieces of the file have been received). They will be recreated if deleted. I'm surprised to hear one was in your Shared folder.

You can reduce the number of local hosts in the advanced options in the new beta details/links/discussion here.

Another option might be to get a list of hosts from a friend who has more varied connections. (They are stored in the gnutella.net file somewhere on your hard drive). I haven't tried this, but read about this elsewhere.

You can manually add a host in the box on the connections pane, but that's not really a solution.

Usually it's best to leave the connections alone and let the code pick the best combinations.

Search for posts by verdyp. He knows the network very well and definitely would have much more info.

I am connecting using 56 dial up modem. I am using a local ISP. I used to use compuserve (I had no problems here, but it cost money) and now I use one from a local college.

Would you recommend I sign up for the beta program. The other person you mentioned that might be able to help me, how do I contact him. I knew to this whole thing.

many local colleges block or restrict filesharing. If you can phone someone who administers the college network, ask them if they allow filesharing, especially to "the gnutella network on port 6346."

That would explain most of the results you see. Too, some companies, like Sandvine, also sell filesharing controllers. When my ISP experimented with Sandvine's system, for example, most of my connections looked as though I was connecting to myself.

Is it possible for me to change the port, and would that help my dilema? If so, how do you do this?
