Smile ver 1.6b/new install/cable modem/no connection

H E L P !! Have downloaded ver 1.6b, am using a cable modem, and show no connection. I 'was' using a router behind the cable modem because we have more than one computer in the house. However, I bypassed it. I still receive an error message when I start LimeWire that says 'could not find a port to use for incoming connections. Pleas specify a port from the configuration window. (wherever that is) This router (syslink) is not setup as a firewall, but I have to admit that at times it seems that way. i.e. FTP - must use passive transfers to get through it. At any rate, I did try to bypass it, using only the standard cable modem. ALSO, under the 'connections' tab the lower left button shows 'connect' - not 'disconnect'. Clicking on the button does nothing that I can see.
Thoughts?
Thanks...
