Default Internet Connection Dropped Randomly

Hi,

I've been reading through the forums and while it seems some people are having the same problem I haven't been able to find an answer so I thought that I would post.

I have recently tried Shareaza, Overnet, Emule and Kazaa. Now I am trying Limewire.

When I connect to Limewire it runs perfectly well for anywhere from 2 hours - 15 min. Then after a while my internet connection goes dead and Limewire tells me that there is no internet connection available and I should check for firewalls.

- I have Zonealarm installed, but it is fully configured to allow limewire uninhibited access to the internet.

- Windows firewall is disabled.

- I had this problem with every other file sharing program I've used (Except Kazaa).

After reading other forums they suggest that it's my NIC that is causing my disconnects. BUt the drivers are up to date and even when I limit the number of connections my computer can make to the network, my internet still gets locked up and I have to reboot to connect ANY program to the internet.

Could this truly be a hardware issue? Any help you guys coudl offer would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi. Am having same problem, but have only had it with Limewire. Stopped using kazaa because it was freezing my system. Have used WinMX successfully, but downloads were taking upwards of five hours for one song. Limewire is by far the best option for me apart from the automatic disconnect problem, and I don't have to reboot the whole thing to reconnect. I have Norton Anti-Virus and Norton Personal Firewall installed, but don't think that is the problem because I figure it would not allow me to connect at all if it was. Only thing I can think of is maybe there is a maximum idle time for downloads that causes auto disconnect. Have no idea if this is the case, but seems to be the most plausible as there are so many people having the same problem. Wouldn't have a clue how to access this information, let alone change it. Good luck.

Yeah, the strange thing is that when it's idle it disconnects my entire internet. Not just limewire. If it were only limewire I wouldn't really care, I could just restart it.

But it's frustrating that my entire system locks up and until I shut down limewire, nothing will work.

But I think that I've noticed recently that it's when (like you said) limewire is idle for some period of time. I haven't been able to figure out how long yet.

So basically it's impossible for me to d/l large files which is a real bummer. About the only thing I CAN get is porn and that's not what I wanted limewire for.

Maybe I should try coughing up some money for the version of Kazaa without adware. I figure if I'm going to spend money on something it might as be something that is reliable. Cause I doubt this problem would be solved with limewire pro.

Can anyone help shed some light on this please?

My internet disconnects too when I use Limewire...and I have noticed that it only seems to happen when my computer is idle...
I've got "Protowall" and "Trend Micro Internet Security" running with my XP firewall on...

I haven't had this problem when I use Emule, Kazaa and WinMX.

Have had the same problem with Kazaa that you are having with Limewire. The first dozen or so times that I used it had no problems at all, though a little slow. But then it started freezing the whole computer, and the only way I could get out of it was to turn my pc off. I also thought if I forked out the money for the ad free version with the download booster things would be better. Not so. I wasn't even on for half an hour and it froze my pc. That's when I started using WinMX. Then I tried Shareaza, but it wouldn't even let me do searches, so turned to Limewire.
Have to say that apart from the auto disconnect, Limewire is by far the best application I have tried as far as searching ,storing, sharing and download speed is concerned. So I guess I will have to be prepared to monitor my pc until a solution can be found.
Did notice today that everything was working fine until I reduced Limewire to my system tray and that's when it started playing up.
Whatever you decide to do, unless you are prepared to risk blowing your dough, I wouldn't bother spending the money on Kazaa.

I've been watching my connection go in & out lately, too. I thought it was the recent ZoneAlarm Upgrade, but I've narrowed it down to LimeWire. I can watch the connections tab & see the bandwidth slowly drop to 0, occasionally as often as every 5-10 seconds. I can make it happen by refreshing a page in my browser. I recently deleted the limewire preferences folder & started over w/ a fresh Limewire, Java 142, & ZoneAlarm install, with registry cleaning & deleting Application Data folders beforehand. A few weeks ago, I thought it was a problem w/ Opera, and got rid of that, but apparently, the problem's still present, just more apparent in Opera. It tends to freeze my system, causing me to wait sometimes 5+ minutes for the task manager/explorer bar to respond. Looking around the forum I see others dealing w/ it in various incarnations, but no solution as of yet. Sorry I can't offer any more than a "me, too". I wish I could be posting a solution right now rather than looking for one.
