Cannot stop portscans after using Limewire Hi All I`m relatively new to using Limewire and have a cable connection with Zonealarm 2.6 installed. Ever since using Limewire for the first time I`ve constantly been getting portscans (up to 1 a minute) as Limewire doesn`t seem to have disconnected me correctly. Before I shut the program down I halt all downloads and uploads, yet there still seem to be people trying to get at my files as if I were connected. Obviously Zonealarm is protecting me, but it`s still a pain. Anyone know how I can stop this from happening? Apologies if I haven`t explained this particularly well, I hope it makes sense... Cheers Richard ; ) |
I came to this forum because the same thing is happening to me. I hope someone has a solution because its really annoying! Hbomb47 |
that happens because of the way limewire is designed. When you connect to other hosts it gathers other hosts (discoverd hosts = ip addresses). So even though you're not using limewire someone else still might have your ip address in their discovered hosts list and try connecting to you. When they try to connect and no connection is available it removes you. Since you have some type of firewall software it shouldnt be a problem. |
Scud is correct. With any Gnutella client you're forming a huge "web" of connections between many different hosts (potentially thousands). When you close your program it make take some time for all those other hosts to realize your gone. Another part of the problem is the retry many clients (esp BearShare) use can't tell if the host is just busy or has exited altogether. They'll retry a download every minute or so forever! Again it's not really harmful and can happen any time you run a server or P2P app. |
I've shut down Gnotella 7 days ago and I still get 3-4 hits per second. I wish that someone put a automatic expire of the retry function in. It makes my ZoneAlarm logs huge. |
