I am also having connection problems from my dorm. Last night I installed LimeWire; it worked, connected, everything was fine. Today I am unable to connect. BUT I also have SoulSeek P2P sofware that ran fine last night and today. Windows XP, no firewall that I'm aware of...no idea why I could connect last night but not today! |

No firewall, huh? I suppose you include in that XP's built-in one?

How about window$ XP SP2? I hear that their "advanced security features" really suck for everything except browsing the internet (after all, that's all every windoze user does with an internet connection, right?. University firewalls are usually impossable for normal computer users to get around. Although, depending on the firewall, there probably still ways to get around it. If Kazaa works try changeing LW to listen on that port, as mentioned earlier. If that is not possible or doesen't work there is probably a way to disguise LW's connection as legitamate. With time and knowledge you can find a way around it. Keep in mind that P2P is blocked at colleges for a reason. So if you choose to circumvent it to use LW anyway you are probably breaking the rules. You can probably see where this is going. For example, if you choose to download Brutus to brute force an account with permission to get through the firewall, steal the username and password, then use it to get LW's connection through the firewall, you would be breaking not only university rules but national laws as well. In my opinion, the ends don't justify the means. So, you should probably just buy CD's or connect off campus. Good luck. deepblue |

I have my windows Xp firewall turned off, Norton Security Firewall off, and I followed the intructions on the page masa-something (sorry can't remember your name right now) posted. But still can't get a connection. I don't think its some part of campus internet security because I had LimeWire working fine last night. Plus SoulSeek will work here. No idea what could be keeping this from working again. |

If by masa-something you mean the guy that posted a thread about optimizing Limewire, then it's me and it's murasame. Funny, masamune was the first user name I had considered using in these forums (after the famous Japanese swordsmith -I forget which era-) but chose to use the other swordsmith's name instead. Well anyway, go to Soulseek and look around in it's Options menu (it's gotta have one somewhere). Look for the port that Soulseek is listening too and write it down. Go to LW, open the Options and go to Advanced. Type in the port that Soulseek is using. A firewall can be configured to allow some ports to recieve FTP messages. The same goes for Campus Firewalls. If Soulseek's port is different than LW's and your Campus' got a firewall that allows Soulseek port to do it's thing, then if you change LW port to that of Soulseek, it should work ok.
