problems with efficient networks 5851 router/firewall Everything was working fine until we activated the Firewall. Now Limewire doesn't work even with 6346 open. Are there any other ports that Limewire uses for incoming traffic? Wierd thing is that Limewire doesn't work on our Macs but it works on the PCs on the same network. Same thing with IRC, works on a PC but not on a mac. I'd think it was something wrong with the mac, but we have about 20 macs here and acquisition doesn't work on any of them. And, when we turn off the firewall, everything works OK. There's gotta be something that the firewall is blocking besides 6346. any ideas? |

thanks, but it's not a software firewall. It's a hardware box that's running our whole network. If we change somehting on the firewall, it should affect every computer - mac or pc - the same. the wierd thing is that it's only affecting the macs. As far as browsing the web from the macs, well I'm writing this reply from one of the macs. Hmm... now I just tried to stream an online radio stream and connect to an FTP server and neither of these would work. well ftp connected but wouldn't download the file list. Arrgh, looks like we're having big problems with the router. help |

kazaa is pc only. but any software using the gnutella network should be connecting to port 6346. I use Acquisition which is a mac only gnutella browser which listens to port 6346 and worked previously to firing up the firewall. Even though the firewall set to allow 6346 tcp and udp, limewire, acquisition, ftp, irc... fail to connect. This seems to be a bigger problem than setting which port limewire listens to. |

Do the PCs have exactly the same setup? E.g. you take the network capble, connect it to the PC and it works, - connect it to the Mac and it doesn't? In that case you may try to find out whether your router is correctly set as your gateway in your mac configuration. I assume you are using a proxy for surfing the WWW? If you cannot surf the WWW without the proxy, you probably did not set your gateway. If you can, however, I would assume that your local software firewall on your Mac is badly configured. |

Everything is exactly the same on the macs and pcs. Everything works (limewire, ftp, irc...) until we enable the firewall that's built into the router. Then, only the PCs can connect. In theory, the firewall should only be blocking incoming calls to a specific port (6346 for gnutella for example). So enabling the firewall and allowing incoming tcp and udp traffic at 6346 on the firewall should allow gnutella to continue working. But it's not working. It can't be anything wrong with our isp since limewire connects until the firewall is enabled. It can't be the firewall on the macs because there isn't a firewall running on the macs. The only firewall that's running is the one built into the router. It shouldn't be the config of the macs either since they are able to connect with the firewall turned off and I can surf the web even with the firewall on.. |
