I've tried everything and I still cannot connect.

Hey guys. I just installed Limewire 4.0.8 on my windows xp sp1 system and it refuses to connect. I am also using a cable internet connection. I used a method I saw in one of the threads about going into the bug report in options and I found that the "received incoming this message" is false. So, I know that there must be some kind of firewall problem here. I am fairly certain that there is no firewall on this computer other than the windows xp one. So, I went about the steps on the Microsoft website, and on the Limewire website, and in this forum about going into network connections, then settings for the firewall, adding the two Gnutella things and adresses and ports, etc. I did all this twice, following the directions perfectly, but each time it still refused to connect. I tried closing and reopening Limewire and even restarting the computer, but the program is obdurate in its decision to not be fuctional. I also tried that fix in the sticky thread but still to no avail. I've got nothing else to do and I'm on the verge of returning back to the dreaded Kazaa with my tail between my legs. Help!

Why not try the simple thing first and just plain disable the firewall. I'm sure that no hacker-people will try invading your comp in the short amount of time that you'll have it off and if you have Antivirus (which you should) with some kind of Autoprotect (like the Norton one) then you should be safe from virus-type stuff.

I've got McAfee anti-virus. So I guess I'll try disabling the firewall. Thanks guys. I'll let you know what happens.

do you have the latest java installed?

See the java thing. If you do have it, then you can try looking for the LW preferences and deleting them. Relaunch preferences.
If that won't work, unistall Java, go to www.java.com, download and install the latest version. Restart LW.
If that won't work, try opening LW by dbl clicking the .jar, not the .exe.
If that won't work, uninstall LW, and download the latest beta LW. See if it works. (If it doesn't try all of the above with it)
If that won't work, I think it's time for you to try another client, unless some has something else for you to try or I'm forgetting something.

PS: Good luck and be patient:)
