Chill out, all you anti-Microsoft fanatics (and get used to computing securely BTW), Limewire works with SP2.

2 steps:

1. The first time Limewire runs, the Windows Firewall should prompt to enable 2 programs: "javaw" and "<installation_path>\LimeWire.exe". Enable these 2 apps to pass the firewall when prompted.

2. Per Limewire's own instructions ( http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml ) go to Start | Control Panel | Windows Firewall and "Add port..." 6346 twice with the default scope, once for TCP and once for UDP (the names you give these rules aren't important).

Ta da, Limewire works. Amazing, Microsoft did not ruin free computing everywhere, it only enabled 90% of the computers on the planet to connect to the Internet more securely. This should make you happier on its own, even if you ARE running Linux. :-)

Cheers,

J

PS To be fair, before I put this together, I installed the "Event ID 4226" patch from http://www.lvllord.de/?url=tools --which did not help on its own, but I don't think its current installation is crucial to the solution. If the above steps do not work for you, try the utility as well. All I know is Limewire's connection quality is now "excellent" and files are uploading and downloading as before SP2.
PPS I've upgrade to Limewire 4.1.5 Beta.

And, judging from the number of posts on this problem with XP SP 2, it might be a good idea to make this a sticky for a little while...
Thing is, I didn't want to do it myself...
What ya think there, Peerless Plucker ?

I tried all of that and it still would not work, then I pinged netstat and found that we need to open more ports: 6346-6349 with both UDP and TCP then also open the gnutella network with the local port that will show in your netstat file and specify the id: 127.0.0.1 when you change scope, remember to do both UDP and TCP. Only then did it work and I just got excellent connection.

These should be exempted in the 1st place. Thing you must remember is that SP2 changes a lot of the settings. 'So' you need to go back & check/& change them back.

SP2 limits the no. of ports (as remember it.) The patch is supposed to remedy this. BUT there's been a no. of successful suggestions made that don't work for every individual (incl. the patch.) I'd suggest you search the forum for 'sp2' or else 'service pack'. There's been 'more' than 1 patch out already (incl. 3rd party) & there's sure to be more! If it is important to you to remedy the situation then it is worth the time & effort to find the alternative answers to sp2 probs already listed on the forum. Reiterating, not 1 answer solves everybody's probs. So check 'em all out!!!!!

Cool It worked for me

I just tried the directions that ZAP had posted and it worked excellent for me, not to mention that I feel safer having SP2 on my system (although it may be a false sense of security,LOL). Thanks ZAP for the post!

I tried opening all of the ports (6346-6349) on both UDP and TCP and also the local port 2456 from netstat. I still could not connect. Any suggestions.

arps77 are you using Win XP SP2? If so, keep in mind what this update does. It changes your firewall settings back to default & reduces your port availability (to my understanding.) Have you applied the patch for sp2 yet? There's the recent official MS patch & there was an earlier 3rd party one (both have solved 'some' people's probs but not everybody.) Search the forum for sp2 or service pack for more suggestions about how some people solved this issue for themselves. There's also this: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=28437

Firewalls is not my area, but I'm a little curious why you chose port 2456?! Also see this: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=25119 & also alternate ports: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=24523
