Hi guys ... so i've read all of the above and tried all that i can to help but I'm still stuck with incredibly low connectivity that should be at least connecting in the high 20+ kb/s

I'm sooo frustrated... d/ls are taking forever!

I've got windows xp / norton 2004 / adsl connection and have done the whole disable firewalls with no change .. i think it has something to do with that stinkin service pack 2 ... but i've tried all with no luck.

Please please please... if you know of something / anything that can help..please post!!!

Chill out, all you anti-Microsoft fanatics (and get used to computing securely BTW), Limewire works with SP2.

2 steps:

1. The first time Limewire runs, the Windows Firewall should prompt to enable 2 programs: "javaw" and "<installation_path>\LimeWire.exe". Enable these 2 apps to pass the firewall when prompted.

2. Per Limewire's own instructions ( http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml ) go to Start | Control Panel | Windows Firewall and "Add port..." 6346 twice with the default scope, once for TCP and once for UDP (the names you give these rules aren't important).

Ta da, Limewire works. Amazing, Microsoft did not ruin free computing everywhere, it only enabled 90% of the computers on the planet to connect to the Internet more securely. This should make you happier on its own, even if you ARE running Linux. :-)

Cheers,

J

PS To be fair, before I put this together, I installed the "Event ID 4226" patch from http://www.lvllord.de/?url=tools --which did not help on its own, but I don't think its current installation is crucial to the solution. If the above steps do not work for you, try the utility as well. All I know is Limewire's connection quality is now "excellent" and files are uploading and downloading as before SP2.
PPS I've upgrade to Limewire 4.1.5 Beta.
wow. thanks. you made my day

Default guessing firewall is the problem

caught a second breath, still not getting full connectivity, tried opening windows firewall but got message that could not display, service is not running, and how can i tell if i'm running sp2. I have had so much problem with this computer lately with pop ups and... that i have had it wiped clean twice and at this point not sure if i ever reinstalled sp2. I did test and id checked ok and also went into the tools on LW and the pnp was clicked. so where do i go from here

colebug Hi.

System details - help us to help you Please.

Recently there's been a problem with people not providing enough details about their setup - despite being asked again & again.
So let's make it easy for everyone...the details that we need if we're going to be able to help with complex problems are:

Cut n paste Just these Questions, put your answers in bold text Thank You.

1. what OS version (eg: Windows 98, XP,OSX, Vista) ?
2. What firewalls you have ?
3. How much ram ?
4. Hard Disk space available ?
5. Connection type (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) ?
6.Modem what brand name & model numbers ?
7.Router brand name & model numbers ?
8. Where are you trying to connect from (house, apartment complex, school, student accommodation, work, etc.) ?
9. What version,LimeWire & Java, are you using. Go to L/W's Help/About L/W, THIS show both LW & Java version.?
10. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider) ?
11. Do this test click here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ should say 'Your test worked!. What happens ?
12. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
13. Is this your 1st try at LW, or is this a new problem with an experienced user.?
14. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface ?
15. Have you given full permissions for LimeWire to pass through your Firewall ?
16. XP users, Please state XP firewall on or off.?
17. In Start & remove Programs, Is this update Installed, "Security Update for Windows XP (KB931261)" ?
If Windows Updates are not seen, Tick the box at top of page, (show updates)
18. Are you using Manual Port faward in LimeWire OR UPnP ?
You can check HERE, IN LimeWire Go, Tools/options/advanced/firewall Config

These are all contained within the sticky Connection problems? Check here first!
but possibly some people are getting a bit confused or lost when we direct them to this sticky & ask them to provide their details.

This information can be vital
For instance, some ISPs are known for blocking p2p/throttling bandwidth,
some connection devices are known for being unreliable in certain situations.

So please, help us to help you & provide as much info as you can.
If you're new to LW or new to computers & aren't sure how to answer some questions,
or don't know what an ISP or router is - just say so. Nobody's going to yell at you:wink:
Even if you can't answer all the questions in one go...don't worry. Do the best you can & we'll take it from there.

Talking wow!

I didn't even know it was the sp2 that screwed up my limewire. All I knew was that one day it just refused to connect. Haha - I had reinstalled limewire, deleted every file in my shared folder, deactivated all my firewalls and antivirus/spyware programs, and basically made my computer an open invitation to anything on the the web - and limewire still refused to connect.

But I came to this forum and thought, hey, maybe my computer updated itself or something (cause it does that, so thanks a lot b. gates). And I opened those two ports the first post in this thread said to open and TA-DA! It worked!

Thanks a lot!!!!!
