Default Connection Problems

Hi, I recently formatted my computer and reinstalled LW. Now it will not connect. I have done everything I have seen on this forum - opening ports, adding number of ports, installing patches, disabling every firewall/antivirus program I have, and nothing works. Please help.

1. what OS version (eg: Windows 98, XP,OSX, Vista) ?
Windows XP

2. What firewalls you have ?
Windows and McAffee

3. How much ram ?
1 Gb

4. Hard Disk space available ?
46 Gb Free

5. Connection type (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) ?
Cable

6.Modem what brand name & model numbers ?
Agere Win Modem

7.Router brand name & model numbers ?
Belkin Wireless G Router

8. Where are you trying to connect from (house, apartment complex, school, student accommodation, work, etc.) ?
Home

9. What version,LimeWire & Java, are you using. Go to L/W's Help/About L/W, THIS show both LW & Java version.?
LW - 4.14.10
Java - 1.6.0_03

10. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider) ?
Suddenlink

11. Do this test click here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ should say 'Your test worked!. What happens ?
It does say 'Your test worked!'

12. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
Yes, my roommates and I all share the connection, and it works for them. They use laptops w/the wireless connection, but my desktop is hard wired to the router via Ethernet cord.

13. Is this your 1st try at LW, or is this a new problem with an experienced user.?
No, I've used LW for several years.

14. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface ?
Yes, rather I disable all firewalls or not.

15. Have you given full permissions for LimeWire to pass through your Firewall?
Yes.

16. XP users, Please state XP firewall on or off.?
On, but opened ports, and created exception for the program.

17. In Start & remove Programs, Is this update Installed, "Security Update for Windows XP (KB931261)" ?
If Windows Updates are not seen, Tick the box at top of page, (show updates)
Yes.

18. Are you using Manual Port faward in LimeWire OR UPnP ?
You can check HERE, IN LimeWire Go, Tools/options/advanced/firewall Config
UPnP, but I have tried both.

Hope that helps you solve my problem.

Thanks

Try the fixes in the post below.
If LW Will Not Connect

Start off by changing Java versions...a lot of people had connection issues with the Java version that you have Remember to uninstall all versions of Java (Add/Remove Programs) before installing a new one.

If that doesn't help, go through the other fixes carefully.

Also have a look at this post...even though it's very old, a few people have recently found that it's worked for them.
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/78282-post22.html

If you're sure that you've tried everything there & done it properly, have a look at port forwarding for your modem. The instructions are here.
Port Forwarding for the Zoom X5
Don't forget to set up a static IP address first! LW's lilstening port, port in the 'manual port forward' box & port forwarded within the modem setup should all be the same number

Same situation....I have tried everything, updated java program, put in all the ports suggested, checked that the limewire is accepted in my firewall programs (running norton personal firewall and windows firewall). Do you add the port numbers in norton personal firewall under the http port list or somewhere else? I only end up with 1 green bar showing and it states it's connecting to the network. I have recently put in a wireless network....is there somethin I should with it? I have tried turning off all the firewalls as well but still nothing.
Let me know if anyone has any great answers.
thanks!

Thanks for your insight....but to make it even more simple....

For all those people who aren't getting a signal or can't connect try this and see if it works... (I have been working at this for hours and finally connected) Basically it's only step 2 from your instructions that we need to follow with one exception as I will explain below...

2. Per Limewire's own instructions ( User Cant Connect - LimeWire ) First start LimeWire | Tools | Options, go to the very bottom of the list to Advanced | Firewall Confi and see what number is in the "Listen on Port" box, copy this down and then go to Start | Control Panel | Security Center | Windows Firewall | Exceptions and "Add port..." Put the number you copied from Limewire in the port number box and name it whatever you want (example of name "Limewire port") in the other box and just leave the green dot on TCP.
That should be it.....start up limewire again the wall should be removed and the green bars should start filling up (it takes a sec for all the bars to go green).

Hope this helps!

2 steps:

1. The first time Limewire runs, the Windows Firewall should prompt to enable 2 programs: "javaw" and "<installation_path>\LimeWire.exe". Enable these 2 apps to pass the firewall when prompted.

2. Per Limewire's own instructions ( User Cant Connect - LimeWire ) go to Start | Control Panel | Windows Firewall and "Add port..." 6346 twice with the default scope, once for TCP and once for UDP (the names you give these rules aren't important).

Ta da, Limewire works. Amazing, Microsoft did not ruin free computing everywhere, it only enabled 90% of the computers on the planet to connect to the Internet more securely. This should make you happier on its own, even if you ARE running Linux. :-)

Cheers,

J

PS To be fair, before I put this together, I installed the "Event ID 4226" patch from www.LvlLord.de - Tipps, Tricks & Utilities - Tools --which did not help on its own, but I don't think its current installation is crucial to the solution. If the above steps do not work for you, try the utility as well. All I know is Limewire's connection quality is now "excellent" and files are uploading and downloading as before SP2.
PPS I've upgrade to Limewire 4.1.5 Beta.

Hi all
OS XP SP2
P4 3.0 Ghz
2Gb ram
I just installed a new copy of XP SP2 and after doing the windows updates, installed Limewire. Limewire will not even start, it reboots my computer.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled it a couple times and get the same result.

Trying to find info specific to this problem in other threads seems to lead to the Windows Firewall and checking open ports, however Limewire doesn't even show in the Exceptions list.

Any insight?

Thanks.
