Lightbulb SP2 & Limewire: relax, it works

Chill out, all you anti-Microsoft fanatics (and get used to computing securely BTW), Limewire works with SP2.

3 steps:

1. I installed the "Event ID 4226" patch from http://www.lvllord.de/?url=tools --which did not help on its own, but I don't think its current installation is crucial to the solution. All I know is Limewire's connection quality is now "excellent" and files are uploading and downloading as before SP2.

2. The first time Limewire runs, the Windows Firewall should prompt to enable 2 programs: "javaw" and "<installation_path>\LimeWire.exe". Enable these 2 apps to pass the firewall when prompted.

3. Per Limewire's own instructions ( http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml ) go to Start | Control Panel | Windows Firewall and "Add port..." 6346 twice with the default scope, once for TCP and once for UDP (the names you give these rules aren't important).

Ta da, Limewire works. Amazing, Microsoft did not ruin free computing everywhere, it only enabled 90% of the computers on the planet to connect to the Internet more securely. This should make you happier on its own, even if you ARE running Linux. :-)

Cheers,

J

PS I've upgrade to Limewire 4.1.5 Beta.

I do not agree about your views (Microsoft & security ). But your post is both helpful and well written, so I'll sticky it.

Ciao

Hello

I will describe the actual situation as one not stabel.

When I start LW , best I get is poor.

Then I enter firewalls settings as written elsewhere.

and some time goes , and suddenly we have turbo again

But next time I log in , same thing.

Just a suggestion from another thread..

I found that if I have anything at all opened BEFORE Limewire, I can't get beyond a poor connection. If Limewire is the first thing I start up off my desktop after a reboot, then I go to Turbo almost instantly.

I had IE open and was browsing all day, closed it and opened LW - nothing. So I rebooted and when my start screen came up, opened LW first, then IE and all was perfectly fine.

Just another thing to give a try.

Actually that happens a lot more often if you upgrade to WinXP SP2.

For me this is a normal situation. Somtimes its fast sometimes slow... perhaps some people have more problems because sp2 limits the max connections to 10.
