Solution if not using the WinXP Firewall Hello, If you are a LimeWire user who is being bombarded with these "solutions" about the WinXP Firewall, yet you don't even have it enabled, here's my solution: (Keep in mind this is for running all other firewalls aside from the WinXP Firewall. If running the WinXP firewall, go back to the sticky'd post about it because that works too.) 1. Go to http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp and download the latest version of JAVA and install it, your firewall will ask for permission for all the JAVA installation components so allow them all. 2. Manually start JAVA (because I've noticed that Limewire won't) by going to: Start->All Programs->Java Web Start->Java Web Start ... At this point, your firewall will ask you for permission to allow javaws.exe and javaw.exe, allow both plus any other popups that are opened. 3. Now start LimeWire and leave it running for about 10 minutes, then use it. This will allow you to develop a better connection. Everytime you restart your computer or close the Java Console, repeat step 2. This worked perfectly for me and now I am operating at "Excellent" when before I had "Connecting..." all the time. Hope this helps... Dan |

Proof Here is proof that my solution works... See the part that is outlined in red and see that my Quality is TurboCharged and I am NOT a Pro user, I am a Free user. Notice the difference when you utilize the above strategy? Thanks, Dan |

Advice Oh yeah, I forgot to mention a piece of advice, so here it is... Whenever you are using LimeWire, ALWAYS have it's media player playing something, even if you mute your speaker. This will ensure that LimeWire is working at peak performance, meaning speed of the application and speed of your quality. I had no idea why this works, but I've discovered it so I thought I'd mention it. Thanks, Dan |

Yes it does have to do with firewalls. When initially installing LimeWire and never having run the Java Web Start console, javaw.exe will not have permission to run which will prevent LimeWire from working. Please Note: You are right, you don't need to have the Java Web Start console running, but you MUST run it at least once to make sure your firewall recognizes the javaw.exe file. This might not be a problem for every firewall, but it was when I used Windows XP with ZoneAlarm/ZoneAlarm Pro. Dan |

As I said there is no need that Java is running and Java needs no permission to connect. I guess you installed SP2 and had a poor or no connection, you changed a few settings and now it works - it was luck. Morgwen |

And excuse me for being right, but look at all the references of having to give permission to javaw.exe as said on the LimeWire official website: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml Until running Java Web Start I was never even ASKED to give permission to javaw.exe, so whatever. Don't try to rat on me when I provided a solution which works, irregardless of whether it is required or not. |

danap--don't get upset by Morgwen's posting style. It can come across as confrontational, but is actually trying to be helpful. Reading and writing posts in a second language/culture requires patience. Cheers--glad you found a solution: hope those who found it helpful will take it in the best spirit intended. |
