Default Connection Problem

Been using LimeWire a coupla years on 1 Gig G4 with Mac OSX 10.3.6 and 1024 kbps DSL.

The transfer speeds slowed down to 1kbps so I purchased new version of LimeWire PRO. Still slow, but lived with it.

Then upgraded to 4.2.2 and now it will not even connect. What can be done?

odd

couple of troubleshooting suggestions:

if you can connect, check transfer speeds from a reliable source (download one of the files from www.magnetmix.com --I just checked and got the transfer at 124KB/s). Transfers usually depend on the host.

Messed up user prefs? Check by creating a new admin user in OS X's System Preferences->Accounts. You can transfer the LW installer to the public folder of your usual account, or just get a new installer for the new account by going to http://www.limewire.com/english/cont...pro_lookup.jsp

If LW runs fine in the new account, then you'll know the problem is in the user settings of your old account.

Default now connected

In the time since posting, LimeWire now is connecting and the quality is "turbocharged." However, the download speed is still in the 0-2kb/s range, including from magnetmix.

I tried following you instructions but was stumped in finding the "new account" I established. I am a single user with a single computer and have no knowledge of how or why to use alternate accounts.

I did strip any and all LimeWire remnants of the computer to reinstall and configure from scratch. This completed, I am still downloading at a top speed of 2 kb/s.

Any suggestions?

See the OS X Help for "Adding a new user account to your computer"

Creating multiple accounts on the same computer in Panther is really handy and quite easy. All it means is that the new account has its own home folder (and thus all its own preferences). I use separate accounts on my iBook to keep my usual prefs safe. For example, I like to use a separate account when trying out a beta version. If anything is odd, I don't have to worry about my usual prefs or files getting messed up. Too, if one of my kids needs my computer for something, I don't have to worry about them messing with my desktop pattern, email settings, dock location, etc.

You can have multiple accounts running at the same time, and use the Fast User Switching feature of Panther to switch from one to the other. Rather cool, really

Anyway--back to your situation: The magnetmix test is important: something is choking your bandwidth (I hope it's not your ISP messing with filesharing controls). Go here, and test/check out your ISP's internet connection speeds http://www.broadbandreports.com/stest

What do you get?

Default connect speed

The bandwidth speed is measuring 900 - 1000 kb/s.

How do I test if my ISP has filesharing controls? Is that even legal? Can I request they remove them. I am with Verizon Avenue.

[Hey ursula--good to see you around again]

re verizon, http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...8&pagenumber=3 only reports one poster mentioning verizon (dissed)

google "verizon filesharing" and you'll find lots more, but call Verizon and explain that you're having trouble downloading LEGITIMATE content over the gnutella network (give them the magnetmix example) and ask if they "restrict or throttle filesharing to the gnutella network over port 6346." I don't know of easier ways to test gnutella connectivity.

As far as your own setup is concerned . . . how many files are in your incomplete folder?

I am back to not being able to connect though my tested bandwith speed is 1100 kb/s.

There were only a half dozen incomplete files that are now deleted.

I e-mailed Verizon Avenue support regarding the gnutella restriction and await word.

Googling the company only shows a stance of fighting the RIAA.

found another test-- http://www3.limewire.com:6346/

I expect it should show you "Your test page was a success!" and will mean that you at least have a route through port 6346

btw--when you removed all old limewire traces, I'm guessing you also removed the LimeWire folder from ~/Library, right? email me and I'll send you my gnutella.net file (it has a good list of connections for startup).

The same sig that of course has the link for >
