Hi,
I installed the last Limewire Basic version 4.2.10 on my P4/1.6GHz computure running Window XP PRO/SP2.
After I run the programe it loades without problem and connect to the network.
About one to two minute later the program burden the computure without doing nothing and respond very slowely ( more then 5 minute for any key stroke). In addition, other programes are behave saimilar.
The hard disk led light continusly.
The computure return to normal response omly after I kill the LW using the Task Manager (using Exit is not help much).

Do you have any anti-virus scanning/'fixing' software installed on your machine ?

You are NOT going to receive any viruses in the act of downloading and installing LimeWire from the official LimeWire Download Site.

Obviously if you are using Task Manager than you are not exactly a total newbie !!!

When you look at Processes in Task Manager, do you see any svchost.exe examples of high CPU usage ?

What else - Other Applications - are you running at the same time as LimeWire ?

What other applications, if any, also exhibit deteriorated performance without LW running ?

I ran AVST antivirus ver. 4.5. I use this anti virus about one year without any problem.
I look on the Task Manager while running Limewire (it is take some time for the Task manger to respond). The processes you mentind (it is more than one) take some time about 1% cpu time but most of the time they take 0%. The System idle process take most of CPU time around 95%. The Limewire.exe process take sometime about 2% but most of the time 0%. All other processes (about 40 process) take 0%.
Regarding other programes it is not importent, Any program run very slow also LW itself without any other program run in parallel.
Actualy I use Internet explorrer and Outlook Express in parallel.
I hop this information help you to resolve the problem.

How much ram do you have? Also how much space do you uhave available on each of your partitions? Have you defragmented your hard disk drive recently!? It can make a big difference!

All of the CPU usage figures that have been given indicate a healthy and non-seriously (at worst) 'infected' machine. Congrats !

Two other points in addition to the comments of LotR...

Windows (true for numerous iterations) sometimes does weirdness re: certain defaults... And OFTEN performs blatant stupidities as deemed proper by Micro$haft...

One of these little items of enormous importance is the portion of your Hard Disc Drive allocated to Paging File (or, what used to be known in a slightly saner world as Virtual Memory).

Set your 'Paging File' to

384MB Minimum

768MB Maximum

(Who knows, it may already be set that way ! Miracles happen, huh ?)


The other is a very common madness out there that is definitely a stupidity from Micro$haft...

The Temporary Internet Files setting is almost always set to an absurdly large number...

Set it to 80MB.

Doing these simple steps AND defragmenting your HDD frequently will usually have a very positive impact on overall performance.

Are you possibly having any of the above problems WHILE there is a CD (of any type) in one of your drives ?

Setting the pagefile over 768 Mb, does that negatively influence performance ?
I have set mine rather big you see.

Sorry on the deleyed response but I'm very busy in the last few days.

Regarding your quastion:
1. I have a 256MB SDRAM running at 266MHz.
2. The page file size is fixed to 1GB on a different partitition than the Windows XP.
3. The Window partititin size is 8GB with about 3GB free.

I deleate my previous large (1.2GB 50% downloaded and 1GB 30% downloaded) incomplate files and the LW start working properly. I redownloads those files and after I downloades about 30% of the 1.2GB file and 10% of the 1GB files and restarting the program, The LW behave the same.

I have a theory on this behaviour of the LW as following:
1. At the begginig the LW scan the incomplate file in order to build its data base. This scanning take a long time when the incomplate files are large
2. The program rescan those incomplate files occasionally to refresh its data base.
3. During scanning the computure response very slowly and the hard disk led is light.

My conclusion is that download a large files such as game programes that are larger than 1GB is impossible using LW and some efficient data bus arrengment method is required.

Regarding the Ursulas' defrag sujjestion.
I defrag my computur occasionally (about twice a week), I also defrag the LW hard disk partitition and Window partitition after install the LW but it is no help.

Good observations! Yes LW does take longer to settle down if you have large or many incomplete files. It also scans your shared folders. I'm not sure about the re-scan process however. If you press the Refresh button within the Library, it will re-scan. The scanning of the files does take a large part of LW's energy & should be done sparingly if you have many/large incomplete files as well as many shared files.
I read some time back that apparently LW does have a max dwnld size capability. I don't know if that still applies or not. Nor can I remember what that size is. Perhaps 2 GB at a guess.

By the way, do you use a USB modem/router connection? I've read where some usb modems draw power from the comp & some actually utilise the comp's processor. This of course may affect your comp's performance in some cases.

I have never noticed any 'problems' with the max set way higher than 768MB...
But, I have also very rarely noticed any noticeable benefit when setting max much above 768 or 1024...
Only on older machines with limited memory and also a relatively new HDD (faster access) have I seen an improvement when going up to 1024. Old machines with insufficient RAM seem to have their HDDs upgraded first !!!
