System freezes when I close LimeWire & try to disconnect from internet

The last thing I do before I finish using my laptop is disconnect from the internet by right-clicking on the two little computers in the toolbar on the bottom right of my screen. Since I installed LimeWire, this has been a problem. I close LimeWire and then my entire system freezes and I can't disconnect from the net, can't even open my start menu.
Any suggestions, folks?

Go to LW's menu Tools>Options>Shutdown & press the Shutdown Immediately option box. Then press the 'Apply' button.

Thx for coming back to me on this one. Unfortunately, closing LW isn't a problem- I had already done what you've suggested and LW closes fine. The problem is that after closing LW, when I try to disconnect from the net or open my start menu or >whatever<, I find I can't. My whole system appears to freeze up and I can't even shut down using ctrl alt delete. I have to power off and reboot.
spooky, huh?

That's a tricky issue.

1. Try updating your Java: Java 1.4.2 (click on link)

2. Go to LW's Tools>Options>Advanced>System Startup & untick option box. Press Apply button.

3. Go to LW's Tools>Options>Speed & untick Ultrapeer abilities (unless you prefer to be an UP.) Acting as a UP 'may' mean LW is slow to properly power down.

I think more likely it's a Java issue. I forgot to ask, which Operating System version are you using? And what type of connection? How much ram do you have?

I downloaded and ran the Java thing and checked all the options you mentioned but to no avail. OS is Windows xp, ram I dont know but I have 7.23 GB of available space out of a total of 27.9.
I have SpyBot S&D and Adaware (including AdWatch) installed and am running Norton 2004 although these programs arent actively on whilst using LimeWire.

Hope this info helps

Have you configured your firewalls for xp & norton: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml & http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=30505

I don't know. Does this only happen with LW? Has it ever happened before with any other application?

Yup, done that- no joy. It's odd that nobody else seems to have had this problem....
