Java/Limewire updated. Can't connect.

Hallo
I have Windows XPPro and SP2. Dialup connection.
A pop up said 'Limewire detects you have an old version of Java, recommend update' - which I did and uninstalled the old one. Couldn't connect to Limewire. Message said 'Unable to find Java Run Environment'. I saw that Limewire automatically installs Java 1.3(?) so updated Limewire. Still get the same message and unable to connect.
I also deleted the Preferences Directory but this did nothing either.
I also tried to update Java from the folder in the computer but Windows said it had blocked it from downloading as it had no recognised signature.
I have searched for information on this problem and can't find it.
I should appreciate someone's assistance.
Thank you.

That's right, LW will install just the minimum required version of Java if it detects you don't have it installed. So it's best to update to a later version before you install LW. Update Java: Java 1.4.2 (click on link)

Can you give us a total desciption of your set up:
1. Operating System version,
2. What firewalls you have,
3. ram, 4. HDD space available,
5. Connection type,
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers,
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?

These details are vital if you want us to find out what your connection problem is.

So we've got passed one hurdle.

You will need to configure your firewalls to allow LW & Java access: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml

When you try to connect, allow LW some time to ba able to establish a connection. It can take a while to settle down.
