Can you give us a total desciption of your set up (sorry for repeating some questions! ):
1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98)
2. What firewalls you have?
3. ram?
4. Hard Disk space available?
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
9. Who is your isp provider?
10. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.

operating system winxp, 450 ram, windows firewall, 46gb hd space, dsl connection, sbcyahoo isp, first time user, connecting from home, 2 wire router, version 4.8.1.... thank you for your help

Try these things: Go to LW's Tools>Options>Speed & tick disable Ultrapeer Cap. & press apply button.
Set both uplds & downlds to autoclear.
Close all LW windows you don't need open at that time.
If you're not in front of your comp, then hide LW in the dock.
Reduce uplds to about 70-80% or more. Reduce downlds to 80 or 90%.
Whilst LW is open, click on top of the Progress bar so all incomplete files are organised by % downlded. Then select 1st at 0% & scroll down to last & select it whilst holding down SHIFT key also all at 0% are selected, then pres the Stop button. Then go to your incomplete folder & view it in list mode & click on size column so all are arranged by size. Now delete all those at 0 KB. This will speed up opening of LW & reduce stress on connections & hopefully your router.
You might also consider reducing shared files if you have multiple thousands of them. Good luck. Sounds like your comp is losing communication with your router b/c it's too busy.

Also don't use the Resume button on all incomplete files. This will also stress LW & your comp. If you use Resume/Find sources then just apply it to a couple or so at one time.

same problem here

i've been trying to fix the same problem for a couple month or so.... but i could never find the answer....

my limewire starts up, the loading screen appears, and the limewire window appears. however, while trying to connect to the networks, specifically the Digital Audio Access Protocol, the limewire program automatically closes on itself. i've downloaded the latest limewire, LimeWire 4.8.1, disabled my norton internet security program, and my internet is connected via cable modem.

on a note, whenever i visit a website that starts the Java Applet, when the webpage completes loading, the internet explorer window automatically shuts down. it may or may not have something to do with this problem, seeing as they both use Java and it's been nothing but trouble to me.

Windows 98, first time limewire user, former Ares user but it's been down for a couple of weeks now. 3+ gigs of hard drive left, pentium III, 384.0 RAM, Rogers Hi-Speed service.

P.S. appreciate the attempt, Lord Of The Rings, but i can't even access LW'S tools>options>speed because i can't even have my limewire program open for more than a few seconds upon startup.

Lime Wire Closes at Startup

I had the same problem this week with limewire. It took me almost a week to figure out what i had done to my computer in the last week. In the end it wasd the parental caontrols which came with my BT Yahoo Broadband. I set them up for my little girl. As soon as i disabled the parental controls that came with my internet, limewire worked fine.
