same old song and dance im a brand new user to limewire and p2p and having problems connecting. i am connected with qwest dsl internet connection with msn access. i called qwest and they assured me they didn't block p2p or gnutella networks. i have followed almost every thread in this forum. anyone want to take a stab at my problem? i have a new dell cpu. plenty of harddrive, RAM etc. I am connected with a actiontec GT701-wg DSL modem w/ wireless gateway. I am using windows firewall and Norton System Works for virus protection. When i open LW it works great and says its connecting giving me a green light at the bottom of the bar graph, after a couple minutes it comes up with an error window. It says its unable to connect to hosts on Gnutella network. ive tried to setup my ports for 6346 named Gnutella but it still doesn't help. anyone? |
In LW tools>options>advanced>firewall config --- listen on port should be set to 6346 ---- router configuration should be set to UPnP. Your modem/router has the technology. Next configure your windows firewall to allow LimeWire full access. This link explains how. http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml Not sure about NSW and if it has a firewall. I run NIS which has a firewall. Symantec suggests it is not good to run 2 firewalls at the same time, so I just use NIS, and have windowsXP sp2 firewall disabled, but if NSW doesn't have a firewall use the windows firewall. You should have one firewall enabled to protect your computer. You will need to close and restart LimeWire after making the changes. When LW restarts it should connect. |
thanks fabion, i set up everything like you said but it still wouldn't connect. im not sure what to do. my norton doesn't have firewall so i use windows xp firewall. i have set up the necessary ports for the network. |
1 Attachment(s) Hmmm not sure. That should have worked. Did you configure XP's firewall for both TCP and UDP access? What modem or ethernet card do you have installed in your comp.? How is it connected to you dsl modem -- USB or ethernet cable? The only thing I can think of is that something is not right with your internet connection. You can see if this helps. In XP start>my computer>my network places>view network connections --- higlight your ethernet card --- click repair this connection on the left side of your screen. |
thanks for the help, it still isn't working. i have an Intel PRO/100 VE Nework Connection and my modem is connected via network cable and not USB. I have set up my firewall for Gnutella Port 6346 UDP and TCP. right now i turned off my firewall, Norton and messed with my security setting (put them on low) i tried to repair my internet connection but still nothing. quite a few of my friends are using limewire trouble free but i just cant seem to get it going. I have even deleted the limewire file in documents and settings like everyone is saying to do. ive got to be missing something simple wrong. i have a little computer knowledge but im nowhere near an expert...i just have a feeling it has something to do with my modem or connection. oh yeah i set my modem up for UPnP also. im sorry im wasting all of your time, and the help is definately appreciated. |
Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? Wireless devices tend to be a little trouble-some sometimes. It most likely uses a nat firewall & may require port forwarding. Check your manual or online support for your device to find out how to do. Normal steps are: 1. set up a Static ip. 2. Forward port 6346. 3. Manual port forward instructions & sample image & 2 posts after that. I didn't quite catch your specific details of your device but I'm sure you know where to find them. Keep in mind you can only forward one port no. per computer per application. ;) |
I tried that link and came up with nothing, It wouldn't connect to that either. I set up a static IP and setup forward ports for 6346 TCP and UDP. Still nothing.... Starting to become a rat race i think. |
