Limewire Won't Open

For some reason, since I've loaded 4.8, Limewire won't even open. It gets the command that it's supposed to, but it never actually opens. Any ideas?

Try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Fixes for Limewire If that doesn't work then update your Java to version 1.5 (see previous link for downld link!)

If this doesn't fix it then perhaps there's a problem with your shortcuts. Go directly to the LW program folder & open LW directly. If it opens it means your shortcuts are corrupt. So delete them & recreate them.

My computer only lets me uninstall, not repair. I've tried downloading limewire multiple times, and I think I downloaded the new java as well (though I may have gotten confused and skipped that part)

I love limewire, but it only started messing up for me after downloading 4.8.

To uninstall versions of LW before LW 4.4 then use the Add/Remove control panel. Otherwise go to the Start menu>Programs>Limewire>uninstall. You cannot use the "Repair" function on LW later than version 4.4

Can you give us a total desciption of your set up:
1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98)
2. What firewalls you have?
3. How much ram?
4. Hard Disk space available?
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
9. Who is your isp provider?
10. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.

Use the Add/Remove prog. Control panel to remove the previous version of Java & then install Java 1.5 (but save the Java installer to your comp, don't install java over the net!!! Then install Java from your comp.) See my previous link for a link to Java 1.5 installer JRE!

I have the same problem!!! LW was working for me GREAT until I had to reformat my HD:mad: . I acctualy did it twice to make sure that it was not the windows install that was causing the problem!! I downloaded Java Sun from their web site, reinstalled that about 3 times as well as LW! I have NIS and a router but I know how to configure those to connect to LW...hence working GREAT before the format!!

Basicly the two times I did reformat, I did manage to get to the LW start up screen and then it just frose...after that I can only get the hour-glass for a second and thats it!!! Here is my Specs:

Windows XP SP1 (don't like SP2)
NIS and Router firewalls
1024mb RAM
27.6GB Free Disk Space
High Spee Lite (a little faster than dial-up)
Router: SMC 7004WBR
Trying to connect from Home
LW ver. 4.8.1 w/ Java Sun 5.0 Update 2
ISP: Shaw Cable
And this is a new problem, I would like to say that I'm a experienced user!! :)

I hope someone can help?!

thx

Dan

danwhistler: I came across these (a) http://www.portforward.com/smc/7004wbr.htm, (b) http://firewalling.com/smc/7004wbr.htm for your router. It appears it may not use UPnP. At least I couldn't find any mention of it searching. And it is essentially almost identical to a D-Link model. I know you said you know how to do this anyway.

Shaw has been known to filter or block p2p sharing in some areas.

Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?

danwhistler June 13th, 2005 08:10 PM

when I went to that test site it said that it worked! (the www3 site)

Anything else you might think of? In the mean time I will go to those other sites and see.

Well.....sorry for the double post but.........:D I got it working!!

I was fiddling with Norton Firwall and just started woring my way down the list and found that it was blocking the Java from connecting.....:D It looks like I'm the one to be hit with the stupid stick.....I turned off the firewall and it fired up real quick!!

I have now configured the firewall and it is working fine....don't know why I had trouble and why it did not work but it works now.

Thanks Lord of the Rings for your input!!!!;)

I used to have Norton, but then I got a backdoor virus, and had to manually delete Norton.

Lord of the Rings June 21st, 2005 09:59 AM

Amarra did you solve the problem?

If not, configure your firewall (XP has its own firewall): Firewall configuration instructions

If still problems after this, then perhaps your Java is not agreeing with your system. Uninstall Java 1.5 using the Add/remove control panel, then downld 1.4.2 & install that. You can get a link for 1.4.2 from my very 1st link in this thread about fixes for LW.
