Using 1.7, can't get a connection...tries but dies

OK. I used to use LimeWire not sure which version - but last week my hard drive crashed and was replaced. SO, I installed version 1.7 but it is not connecting. It shows each address as "Connecting...", but then that just drops off and it goes to the next one in the list until it's tried all 5 or 6 and then gives up totally. I am not connecting with a proxy or at a University, but I am behind a firewall.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I did read the FAQ but it doesn't address this specific problem.

I have the same problem for connections

Hi everyone,

I also have the same problem in connecting. I am using a firewall (BlackIce defender) and can rarely get a connect while using the firewall. It only works if i turn my firewall off, which I do not like to do as there are so many script kiddies out there trying stuff.

Is there any way I can make LimeWire work through my firewall? I wouldnt like to explicitly allow all traffic on port 6346, and unfortunately the user interface of the firewall doesnt allow me to restrict the access only to a particular protocol and program. There may be a solution by manually modying the rule set, but I am looking for an easier fix.

Hope I get a response to this

Firewalls...

Hi Guys, Well I just downloaded and I cant connect at all, it tries to connect but nothing happens, if anyone can help please do! As far a firewalls i concerned, download a firewall called doorstop, you should find it at www.download.com, once you have it add a new tcp/ip service with the port number on 6346 and name it anyway you want. Then you just click the "Allow all access" radio button on the firewall interface :)
Good luck!

same thing

Got the very same problem.
- Behind firewall, but with version 1.6b, it worked well without any special setting
- Windows 2000 sp2
- JDK 1.3.1
- Limewire version 1.7

When installing, I just clicked the default values. So everything is standard for this installation, and the very same "installation procedure" worked for version 1.6b.

Max.

new info

Mostly strange : sometime, LimeWire finally connects to hosts, I can monitor what other are searching and I can search myself, but after a few seconds, all the connections simply disappear the the disconnect button switches to connect.

So seems like LimeWire IS able to connect but not able to maintain its connections...

Can't Connect

I was running 1.4 and it quit connecting the other day so I loaded and 1.7 and also cannot connect. It tries and then quits. I'm running win98 w/ Symantec Internet Security Firewall but it worked with the firewall before the other day. Oh well, I guess I'll have to try Bearshare.

Just to chime in here, we are not certain why these problems have all been popping up with 1.7, as we did not modify that section of the code significantly at all.

We are looking into general connection issues, however. We are also working on a change to the network infrastructure that will dramatically increase the number of search results you will receive while simultaneously reducing network traffic and improving the ability to connect to the network.

In short, my apologies for the current frustrations, but I assure you that we are working very hard on some changes to the network that we really think will surprise you.

The information everyone has provided has been helpful, and keep it coming in. We should have this fixed in the next release.

For some reason, today I am able to connect properly. Everything works as usual...

BTW, LimeWire guys : If I have a connection, and the I go to groups and double-click on a group to get the group members list, then I loose my connection automatically.

I hope this helps you find a solution for these strange behaviours.

If you need any user inputs or tests "realworld", just let me know at maxime@zerobase.com . As a java network developper, maybe I can help you !

Jeep on good work guys !

Maxime.
